Am looking for a 47 - 50" Full HD TV for a while and couldnt find anything but I have just come across this one and I think its a deal. Anyone agree?

    http://www.pixmania.ie/ie/uk/5090013/art/lg/50pk350-plasma-tv.html

Dont think there is anything similar in a bricks and morter shop at that price?!

I picked this up in Powercity in late November/Early December for that price.

I see it here and has actually gone up in price...http://powercity.ie/?par=10-14-50PK350

Nearly the same when you take Pixmania delivery into account.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,157 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

Given pixmanias reputation i would avoid it tbh, an i'd just buy it in power city. You can haggle in power city too, so you might well do better.

Got mine from pixmania but they messed up the delivery info if it wasn't for me ringing the Dublin shipping company everyday to make to correct the address I would imagine I would be still waiting for it. I would shop local for such a big product in case of future problems. As regards the telly it's amazing and the price is incredible €669 on powercity wow. Go fir it you won't be disappointed.

Its £570/€670 in Richer Sounds so €699 in Power City seems okay. I was after the PK590 model of this set before Xmas and Power City matched Richer Sounds price although it took them a few days and a change of heart. Fire an email off to Powercity with Richer Sounds price and see what they say.

Check power city website Its actually only €669 it must of been reduced again recently

I know it's probably a great price but I was looking for something as close to €500 as I can get. Anyone recommend a good one for that price? I would LOVE that one though!!!!!

Harvey Norman have a 50" Samsung plasma for €669. Seems like excellent value.

What makes the LG a good deal though is the fact that its 1080p, the Samsung is not. At 50" at this day and age, i'd be going for 1080p. Its a true point that on smaller sets, it is impossible to tell the difference between hd ready and full hd, and that is very true, but at 50", the difference would be visible for many people.

You can find a review of the LG here, and the Samsung for that matter, on this site. The review links seem to be broken at the moment though.

yes I can't imagine were you are going to get a 50" tv for €500 let alone a full hd 50"

I would splurge for the LG

The review link is back working.

Granted, it's a good deal on a 50" plasma TV, but therein lies the problem. You can't simply base a good deal based on the size and/or type of a TV. There are a lot of other considerations to factor in, e.g. connectivity, contrast, black levels, input lag, etc, and going by the AVForums review, the LG 50PK350 has an issue with all of the above. As such, I would recommend someone go for a TV that has great picture quality over a TV that is bigger and has a picture quality of a lesser value.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

Quite true but a lot of people dont really know anything at all about picture quality in any way really, so if all you want is a big cheap tv, there are probably worse options than this

Thats not to say that someone who does know a bit about picture quality couldnt get this and enjoy it, just that they understand that the picture performance will have been compromised by the low price

avoid pixmaina .. if it looks like a good deal, you won't get it delivered and it will take 24 days for a refund.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,214 ✭✭✭JabbaTheHut

Yep, have to agree with avoiding Pixmania. Also, with just looking at the powercity site I didn't see that the OP's tv has mheg5. I'm on the look out at the mo for a new tv and have learned some of the jargon. Mheg5 is a newer version of teletext, it seems. So maybe it's worth looking for that feature when buying to help futureproof it as much as possible. Just my 2 cents

I know that many of us are lazy and don't bother reading links and prefer to rely on summaries such as that kindly provided by Rsaeire there, but in this instance I would urge everyone to have a look at the review as imo Rsaeire's synopsis does not convey the content of the review, I can see where he could pull some snippets out to back up his view, but when the review concludes with the quote below you would have to question his reading of it:
    Conclusion
At this price point I would consider the PK350 to be the very definition of a Best Buy. You have a well made and attractively designed display that has a very accurate pre-calibrated setting as well as a comprehensive set of ISF calibration controls. Once properly calibrated the PK350 produces a reference quality performance in both Greyscale and Colour Gamut and the excellent video processing means that both standard definition and high definition images look fantastic. With this kind of performance, at this kind of price I strongly recommend that anyone who is thinking of buying a plasma on a limited budget should take a look at the PK350.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,888 ✭✭✭Rsaeire

I understand your point Glenbhoy. As I mentioned previously, this is a good deal, but why? Based on the size of the TV, the fact that it's a plasma TV or the fact that it "produces a reference quality performance in both Greyscale and Colour Gamut"? The latter part only indicates a certain part of the overall picture performance. The review indicates that it is a "best buy" based on the price, as 50" plasma TVs don't generally come this cheap.
The overall picture quality of the PK350 was excellent and very impressive for a display in this price range.

While people looking for a cheap plasma TV might think "this is great, I'll go get one", those who are looking for a plasma TV that offers excellent image quality and decent connectivity should consider the caveats of this particular model.
    • It doesn't offer great black levels; which plasmas are known for
    • It doesn't offer great connectivity; only 2 HDMI inputs (1 on the back, 1 on the side)
    • It doesn't have low input lag; again, which plasmas are known for

My goal isn't to ensure people don't buy this TV, just that they're aware what kind of TV they're buying before they spend their money. They can all click the review link and read for themselves what the review states, I'm merely pointing out what I think are key points to remember before making a final decision.

The TV has no issues with black or low input lag. I use my xbox 360 with the TV and there are no issues on that front ever.

Two HDMI ports might be the problem for some people - but I don't need a third one; apple tv and xbox 360 occupy both ports.

My mates all have more expensive tv sets and when they are in my house, they can't believe how good the quality is, i have to tell them that I don't have anything special except a HDMI cable and colour settings turned up...

I just don't want you to put off people getting what is a great TV at a world beater of a price. There are better ones for 1000 Euro plus, but whether you'd notice the difference or not is highly debatable.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,533 ✭✭✭Zonda999

To be fair though, your tv would still have these characteristics, you just dont notice them. Your tv wouldnt have great black levels with reference to a panasonic plasme but it doesnt mean your black levels would be terrible, the good screen uniformity of the plasma would help that.

As for input lag, it is dependent on the user and the type of game your playing, many people claim they are not affected by it. However, if you look at the many reviews of various tv in the last few years, it is impossible not to notice that input lag generally is going up, and that is not a good thing

That's fair enough. I'm pretty sure all TV's have differences and issues. When I bought the TV it wasn't because of the price, the sales guy didn't let me see the prices, he just asked me what I wanted, I told him, he picked out varying TV's, left it on SKY HD and told me to pick the one I thought had the best picture...so there you go, that's how I got my one. Had a budget of 1500 euro so it was a good Christmas the fact I saved over 800 quid.

Watched toy story 3 tonight on it on bluray and I'm sorry but you would need to be some serious image nerd to tell the difference between the lg and an over priced Sony or panny. 2 hdmi are fine for most and you can always buy a splitter. Plus OP post was stating this tv is a bargain alert and he is 100% correct a complete bargain. I love this tv.

Will this TV tune in any of the Irish digital stations or is it really a large monitor?

The only info I found referred to "TNT HD" ...... whatever the heck that is.

It is a good price even for a 'monitor' though.

If it's TNT HD, then it will tune in the Irish DTT.

I have a 50" LG plasma that only displays 720p(although of course it accepts 1080i/p).

I honestly have no issue with 1080p(displayed as 720p) content on mine, it looks fantastic and has great contrast and rich colours(given a bit of tinkering).

I paid €799 in Curries for this exact model in the first post before Xmas. It's down to €749 now. Good TV, very happy with it.

I decided not to go with the LG lads. I currently have samsung and was looking for something along those lines. i found this one and am thinking strongly of getting it. Anyone have one and can give me an honest review? More importantly, Does anyone know anyone working in a store (Cyrrys/DID/Powercity) that will look after me?

None the less the attached is a good price TV.

Then, I'm affraid 50PK350 is your only option. But For 2D pic quality is similar to PX990, and only lacking 3D and Internet I think. Black levels are great!

Agree with this. If budget is 600 you will find it hard to get anything cheaper with the same quality.

Sound is fine. Turned on a couple of options when I got it. If sound is your preoccupation buy a sound system and plug it in. You wont get a better tv for the money.

Pixmania OK but they didnt give the courier my mobile so missed the delivery and had to wait a couple extra days.

Sounds not my priority and I can't get a sound system as I have a toddler and new baby and sound can never be too loud and the toddler pulls at everything. Would you recommend the 50 inch lg full hd plasma here or a 47 inch samsung full hd lcd for 20 quid dearer? Both are Available from my local powercity for about 660 euro.

What is the model number of the TV from Samsung. Powercity website is shocking to navigate.

If you have toddler you will need to factor in getting wall mount. While the stand is sturdy its a big TV and I can imagine a toddler being able to pull it down. The manual says that free standing you should have it anchored as a safety precaution so maybe thats an option. Pixmania had some good prices on wall mounts (look for seller habitat).

    Cheers.

That correct? Might order it from pixmania anyway because they seem to be cheapest. Is there any way to get the postage down? Ordered a tv before and was only €20 postage.......

Yep Pixmania is owned by the same parent group. If you want to recycle your old TV you can bring it to PC world / Currys / Dixons all the same thing.

If you search on google for discount codes you should be able to find one for pixmania which will knock 12 euros off. Also open an account with fatcheese.ie and order through that website for another 3% off (i didnt know about this when i ordered but seems legit site).

The TV is massive and comes in a massive box from France so its gonna cost :)
