    right...

    does thins make sense

if water expands when it frrezes and the majority of frozen water is in the caps in antartica - not the ice bergs in the north poll that means if they all completly melt they will actually occupy less volume in the water (wait do i say take up less volume or take up less space?) - and the sea water wont rise WTF? does that make senxe?

Isn't a good chunk of that ice above the surface of the water though?

No. I think it's the letter N that's throwing it off.

All that cold ice water will affect the oceans currents. The warm water from the gulf of mexico that keeps Ireland's weather reasonably mild would disappear. Our winters would become similar to Moscow (same latitude).

So...it would get much more miserable here.

So...lets keep the fecking ice intact please. I hate the ****ing cold.

    This.

Besides the fact that a good amount of it is not actually taking up space in the water, it is all in one place. If it melts it wont be all at the poles anymore so will spread out everywhere, hence the overall level globally will rise.

somebodies had a few when they get to this thought in their head :p
It would indeed rise, even if most of it is below water.

Why don't we just drink all the water???????????????????/

Are you sure of the maths of this? I think Archimedes might've disagreed.

If you take a glass of water with ice in it and measure the water level before and after the ice melts the water level will remain the same. So therefore the melting of the ice caps won't in itself raise ocean water levels.

Wait! This isn't how the world is going to end, is it? I was kinda hoping for a quick firey death, as opposed to a slow cold one.

It does actually? You crazy man. Annnnd ice sits much higher in salt water due to density, so it's even a more profound affect.

If you let an ice cube melt in a glass the water level stays the same. Something similar probably applies to seawater, but it may be more complicated because of tidal forces, salt content, etc...

Yeah, I just said that but the analogy can be used to see some consequences too. Fill a glass mostly with ice and pour it over someone and fill a glass with only water and to the same level and pour that over someone else. Well, the person with the glass of only water poured over them will be more wet.

The actual answer is that salt water and freshwater have different densities, so when the ice melts more water actually is added, common misconception arises from the Archimedes Principle. Freshwater has more volume than salt water and so there will be some % difference in volume of the ocean. Not only this a lot of the ice that would melt is actually on land and not displacing any water

 No it doesn't, looks as though it should but it doesn't.

Sure, sure but the %diff. isn't that big a deal...is it?

I don't really know, I haven't read papers on water in years, exes brother is a 'water scientist' in NASA and i took an interest in water for no reason :p I think it's probably like 5% or less so i don't know how much of an affect that would really have, it's more the amount on land I'd say.

Ah balls...another thing to be worried about:(. I was happy out with my comfort blanket of Archimedes. All ruined now.

You do know that in Antartica is land? And that land is covered in ice. If that ice melts, the water will enter the oceans.

True, but that only applies to the North Pole. The ice on the South Pole is on average 2,450m metres thick and the south pole itself is at 2800m. So all that ice would come off the land and into the ocean.

On the upside when all ice melts we can all buy apartments in Antarctica

I'm not worried, I live on the first floor so I'm safe. Worst case scenario I might have to buy a canoe.

Ice will melt. Water will boil. You and I can shake off this mortal coil

Ha ha gotta love the pub physics lessons. Alot of the ice caps sit above the sea level these melting can surely only add to the level. even density of the sea water and ice would be negligible considering the scale we are talking. density of sea water =1025 kg/m3 density of fresh water =1000kg/m3. We're gonna have to learn to swim fast, think waterworld here people.

A lot of ice is ontop of greenland as well, so that'll boost up the levels a bit too.

There's a good documentary about this, i think Kevin Costner was in it.
