I think Mine Smell Like Honey was the wrong choice for the first single here. UBerlin would have been a better choice. I've been very impressed with the new album. Many people said that Accelerate was one of their best. I liked it but it was far from their best.

I'd love to see them get back to the sound of New Adventures in Hi-Fi rather than Automatic for the People or Out of time.

Much as I adore rem I dont like the pop-y version of them.
hifi was brilliant, I would also go for that sound again
Just listening to "mine smell like honey" now, I actually like it

Not sure what to make of it.

I hear a shot load of old REM songs reflected in various tracks.

The last track is basically E-bow and country feedback (greatest REM song?), driving me crazy. Annoying as it's probably the best song on the record.

I've heard that new song "Every Day Is Yours To Win" a few times on the radio. It sounds so similar to Richard Hawley's "Baby Your My Light".

aye, its not bad but overall its very derivative of their old stuff. fair enough, they're entitled to rip themselves off, but I'd rather listen to the originals...

True i've had country feedback a maddening loop the last 2 days.

Also annoying that Monster isn't on spotify for some reason. MY fav album.

Really like it too....My favourite track since
    "daysleeper" from the album
    "up", which was genius

Sorry but I didnt like it at all (the song, I havent heard the album yet). Its just littered with winning bits from their other songs to try and codge something good together and doesnt seem to have anything new to it.

My first thought (and 2nd and 3rd) was "it sounds like..."

And it made me want to go back and listen to their old songs. Nothing wrong with that I supose but I'm not too enthusiastic about the new album.

Not sure about that: don't forget, in spite of some pretty insipid albums since Berry's departure, they have still recorded some really great songs in that time - Imitation of Life and The Great Beyond most notably. But I agree, it's a very good song, and I say that with more than a small measure of relief as a lapsed, once-ardent REM fan. The album overall is a decent piece of work, though I do think U-Berlin is the outstanding track, after three or four listens through of Collapse Into Now.

REM have been at it 30 years and every song must now be completely unique and bare no resemblance to anything theyve done before??

Uberlin - makes one think of "Drive"
Blue - "Country feedback", "Ebow the letter", "Belong"
Alligator Aviator Autopilot Antimatter - "Im Gonna DJ", "Animal"
That someone is you - "All the right friends"
Walk it Back - "Make it all okay"

SO WHAT? this is a band that have an utterly amazing variety of songs. Losing My religion, The end of the world, Shiny happy people, whats the frequency, kenneth? Drive, Man on the moon, Stand, Electrolite etc etc etc. SO WHAT IF THEY RELEASE SONGS THAT RESEMBLE PREVIOUS ONES?
