copying camcorder dvd onto laptop

i have tried unsucsesfully to save content from sony dvd+rw onto my laptop. the files save but come up blank??? what am i doing wrong ? i have 5 yrs worth of memories on different dvds that i would like to back up:) tried playing it as well but says unknown file type - bup
