My beloved A6 Quattro has gave me it's first bit of trouble today - the engine switched off when I let it idle. It started again ok and I got a few hundred yards, then he next time I let it idle again, it died again. For several minutes, same problem. About 20 mins later it began to work again.

It's the 2.8L V6, 1998. I don't know if this car has a dedicated idle control vavle - I thought if it does then that might be the problem. Any other ideas?

PS. A few weeks ago I had the opposite idling problem, for a brief period the engine was idling at 3000rpm, which made stopping a bit interesting

EDIT: used a code reader to get the fault codes and all it found was 16795 which is a secondary air pump problem and 00526 which is something to do with brake lights.
