Hello there. The first place I'd head to is ID jewelry. Their site isn't the most awe-inspiring but the deals are excellent (as long as you stick to GIA and AGS-certified stones). Irish people abroad are fond of Haniken's. Hard-selling but trustworthy and with good deals -- Engagement rings direct. A little bit further away on Long Island is Good Old Gold -- top-class stones but a little bit more expensive than ID, for ex. And by appointment only are James Allen.

At today's exchange rate E3500 = $4754. Minus about 8% (NY sales tax) gives about $4374 to play with. Looking at James Allen's inventory for GIA/AGS certs I'd go for a basic solitaire setting: setting ($360) and this stone ($3590). Making for a grand total of $3950. Okay, good luck with your trip :)

I got a brilliant ring in Hanikens last August and i posted some advice on them awhile ago - do a search and you'll find it, or search for my posts.

I also posted about my Tiffany NY experience too.

Was recommended (from boards.ie posters) to go to Salvatore & Co. when I was in New York

Myself and the OH had a very good experience with the team there and bought her engagement ring.
