720p only though, lots of my stuff is 1080p and the Boxee Box handles it fine.

Also i've heard the audio passthrough capabilities are limited at the moment.

It'll decode 1080p, but the video output is limited to 720p.

No it won't, it wasn't specd or designed to decode/play 1080p content, so it's never going to play it properly, regardless of what software your throw on it. All reports of 1080p on the ATV2 with XBMC are bad, a stuttery slideshow, 720p is fine.

The GPU in the Apple TV2 is a SGX 535 as used in the GMA500 and CE4100 (Boxee Box etc). Its perfectly capable of decoding a typical 1080p H264 stream. Actually its specced for two streams at once.

The A4 processor is what lets it down. I've been following this on the Boxee and AVS forums, lots of users on there tried it, it fails to decode 1080p BD rips without stuttering. The Gui even stutters.

It may be ok for someone who wants to watch SD content and will probably get better in future when they add support for its remote, usb hd's etc. For now I'm sticking with My Boxee Box, it plays every file I've tried flawlessly, pity the XBMC guys have no interest in making XBMC work on it.

Actually it turns out that AC3/DTS passthrough is technically possible - it is disabled by default at the moment in order to test the downmix matrix. You can enable it by tinkering with some config files and the option will be added to the GUI at some stage. Very interesting news.

Also that'll take a big load off the CPU as well once its enabled.

I don't know what to say about people having trouble with 1080p but it should definitely be technically possible on SGX535 (ive used it) and plenty of ATV2 users seem to be reporting success. Maybe its a network issue for those who are having trouble. The devs have discovered the iOS hardware decode API so the CPU power shouldn't be a major issue, especially once audio passthrough is enabled.
