Washing water bottles

I'm getting tired of the routine of cleaning the grime out of my (bike) bottles... they get abused for a mix of water, energy drinks and recovery drinks during swim/cycle/runs. When they start to smell I usually give them a decent wash and disinfect them. Can I just bung them in the dishwasher instead?

I throw mine in the dishwasher. Seems to work.

I sterilise them every so often with a soak in Milton. The only problems are protein based recovery drinks which smell like something's died in the bottle if you leave them.

As above, I dishwash and Milton mine. However the dishwasher tends to disfigure some of the bottles due to the heat so check of all your bottles are dishwasher safe first

    ^ Milton for me too.
There's also a new bottle out called 'clean bottle' and the bottom screws off for easier cleaning - haven't seen them around in Ireland yet though.

Baby's bottle brush will shift the protein sludge. Then bung them in the dishwasher.

i rarely if ever forgot about the ones used for protein. ive thrown out plenty of bottles which had protein left in them and didnt bother try to salvage them. I just use good old hot soapy water. Ive also heard putting them in the freezer for a while is good as it will kill the bugs. anyone ever hear that one?

I'm fairly bad at washing out my bottles. There's nothing worse than being out on a spin and noticing green mold on the bottom of the bottle.

    Works for smelly shoes too!!!
Leave them in there as long as you possibly can - shouldn't do them any harm. Just remember to put them into plastic bags and to defrost them outdoors if possible later on.
