    Apple.:)
    Great.:D
Always wanted to be able to buy an ipod,
I think the iphone is a great gismo.;)

but the thing that always stopped me from every buying anything apple is...
proprietary everything... from usb connections to itunes.

and now they've gone even further by inventing
    "pentalobular" screw heads.

ok so some products use torx or security torx to stop very novice people
from dismantleing devices, where they're not likely to know what they're doing.
Chances are if you do know what your about, you own torx drivers..

So apple are now fitting iphones with their "pentalobular" screws to stop
anyone, but them, from opening them up..:(
If you send an iphone4 with regular philips screws for repair it'll come back with theese new screws.
and forget about buying drivers for theese screws, only apple have them, and they're not selling them!
a day may come when you might have to apply to own an apple device.:p

i've thought carefully about placing smileys in this post..
    :pac:o o o o O o o o o O o o o o

They already are on sale, conveniently on the site that first kicked up the first about them.

Do you honestly think I have an iPhone because of the type of screws it has?

I bought it because of its functionality and possibilities......no intention of ever opening it up.

These new screws are not going to have any impact at all on sales as the majority of people do not worry about things!

You're right, i know your right.:)
Of course you dont have/not have it because of the screws!
You prob dont even care that it has screws!

99.99% of people have no interest in opening it up.
So why use proprietary screw heads?

To stop anyone who might want to open it,
including any non-apple repair or battery replacement.

of course it wont affect sales, but it would be a consideration for me.
i wouldnt buy a toyota if it could only be serviced/repaired by toyota!

The screwdrivers that are on sale are a bodge-job. Its a five-point bit that just so happens to fit, but youre likely to strip the screws if you're not careful.

It costs money to switch to a proprietary screw, and that cost will be passed on to the consumer. It might only be a few cents per device, but its the principle. They're not doing it for the good of consumers, it doesnt benefit you or your device in any way. It doesnt make it 'better'.

The only reason to do it is to make it harder for you to repair or modify your own devices. So basically they're giving you the finger and charging you for the privelage.

wow, pretty much every single piece of mobile tech has proprietary screws or casing.

4 simple words here for the OP:

    You are missing out.

I would no more open my iTouch than I would attempt to take the cylinder head off my car engine so what type of screws hold it together are of no interest to me. In fact it's probably better that I can't open it in case I come home some night with a few beers on me and get curious as to what the battery looks like.

Not exactly unheard of for manufacters to use security screws. Ever tried to take apart a DS? Has those stupid tri-wing screws.

While a bit more common, I still had to go out of my way to get a screw driver for them!
