There is an interesting poll on www.breakingnews.ie (about halfway down page on right side). Nearly 3000 votes. Lab and Fine Gael very close and fianna fail doing terribly.

Do people think this poll is on the right track? if so fianna fail are in the doldrums.

The boring old line is that there is only poll that matters but it's true

But even the polls that are in papers having science and statistics behind them.

That's a poll that anyone on the site can vote on, about as realistic as one on boards.ie

Sinn Féin won't get 15% of the vote

Like all opinion polls it asks for party preference but in elections people vote for candidates. if they received help from a particular candidate, that's a guaranteed No.1, regardless of party or policies...

FF will still get a lot of votes from people who can't use the internet remember - how many pensioners will remember that FF didn't dock their pensions and when they meet the nice man the day before the elections their vote will be swayed..

But despite these votes that they pick up I can't see the civil war politics playing as much a role this time round - FF will be annihilated but whether they'll be so bad to be 4th behind SF is doubtful..

or maybe they will and it's just the old though of SF being traditionally the weakest party behind PDs and maybe beating the Greens that's stuck in my head...

I wouldn't be surprised if SF got a higher % vote but FF still got more TDs in because SF are still going to be really relying on first preference votes and will struggle in later stages whereas FF may still manage to pick up votes especially from the real hardline civil war voter/pensioner types... they'll still give the FF man a 4-5th on the ballot paper which will sneak a few FFers in especially if the think they might be able to keep that shinner out anyways...

least that's what I see happening anyways
