Account limited by paypal. :-(

    Trying to help a friend out with the following difficulty;

If an account is limited by paypal due to alleged misuse of the account, surely at the very least they are obligated to release funds!

Has anyone ever been in this scenario?

Waiting to hear back from paypal - but no sign of an answer from them.....

Yup happened to me. I logged into PayPal during a holiday in asia so they probably thought my account had been stolen. I explained to them that I was on holiday etc, etc...... Then I sent them a scan of my bank statement with my full name and addess clearly visible. My account was released shortly after that.

Just saw the "alleged misuse of the account" bit, don't know if sending a bank statement would help out in your situation tbh

What type of limitation is it?

Why would they release the funds if it turns out to be fraud?

What goods are you selling? Is it something to do with your signature? If so you will have a pain getting that limitation off if you are not a registered business.

They requested further information re. recent transactions. ....or something to that effect. It was as vague as that.

If it turned out to be fraud (which its not) - but if it did - should they be holding on to it? Does that then go onto their balance sheet at the end of the year!! what do you think?

LOL - I didn't even realise that I still had that on my sig (as I had settings changed not to show signatures....but no - it's nothing to do with that.

As indicated in my initial post, it's something I am trying to help a mate out with.

No, they should hold onto it until the matter has been cleared up. Not forever, obviously.
If it was fraud, you seem to be arguing funds should be given out to the fraudster:confused:

Something similar happened to me....they suspected the account was compromised somehow. It gave instructions on how I can re-activate it. I followed them and it worked afterwards - no great mystery about it really.

Having said that, it was a nuisance. Also be wary this isn't some sort of scam....are you sure it's definitely Paypal you are dealing with?

Sure - I understand what your saying. No fraud going on here - but if it were - the authorities need to be brought in to verify there is some illegality - and then they take the $. I'd love to know if things play out like this - and I guess my mate will find out also - even in a case of no wrong-doing...

Identity verification is an EU anti money laundering requirement, and is most likely what has been requested.

There could be a million in one reasons why the limitation was placed on your account and to speculate as to why without knowing the details pertaining to the limitation is useless.

With regard to the funds in your account. If an account is limited, and you fail to have that limitation removed from your account then the funds will have to remain on hold for a total of 180 days as a preventative measure. This is done to protect both PayPal from potential chargeback’s/disputes arising from buyers who have paid money into the PayPal account and who may never be receiving their goods, items or services they have paid for.

It may seem like a pain in the arse but there is always a good reason for an account being limited in the first place and as i mentioned above there could be countless reasons as to why. I’m sure you have been requested to provide certain information on your resolutions centre page. So take a look and provide what they require and you’ll most likely have your account restored and full access to your money

I have used Paypal, and have researched them in writing the FAQ thread. I would imagine that I am one of Paypal's least significant customers.

    Agreed:cool:

PS: I see what you did there..

Phone paypal and they will tell you why your account is on hold/restricted.
Usually if this is the case, you will be required to do several things before your restrictions are lifted, ie
uploading documents such as utility bill, drivers licence as they need proof of name , address, etc, and also photo id proof.
Accounts can be put on hold for a lot of reasons such as ebay related selling in what they consider 'risk categories' such as mobiles, electronics etc, could be due to your registered card expiring, or if lots of payments suddenly get made into a relatively new account then that can send alarm bells through their 'system'.

Look at it in a positive light, at least it shows they are doing all they can to stop real scammers.
Annoying though when it happens, as it can take days to solve, so phoning a few times will help speed things up.
