Is there a separate switch/plug to turn on the pump?

Get the men to come back and finish the job? (I'm serious - should they not have tested it)

I let my car run out of petrol once.

Whatever gunk from the bottom of the tank was sucked up into the engine it was never the same since.

Obviously Im not a plumber.. or mechanic.. but it sounds like something you won't be able to fix yourself. Call a plumber maybe?

Bleed the radiators, and seriously, stop with the silly girl stuff.

Is the boiler still running. You may not have heat, but when you turn the boiler on does it fire? It could have gone back into lockout if there was a bit of air in the oil line.

thanks for all the answers!!the boiler is turning on alright and its hot, tap water is lukewarm and I bled the rads and no good, the pipes burst over christmas so not sure if thats got something to do with it!

there's two switches outside where the boiler is and they're both on, the switch at the wall was on aswell but nothing :( turned it off now no point in wasting it, when the heating guys were here and i turned it on you could hear it but then bout 10 mins later it stopped, you can hear it outside at hte boiler though

ok, well it seems your boiler is working fine.

go out and just turn on the pump,( leave the boiler off) so you can hear.

see if you can hear water running, through the radiators, or can u hear the pump actually pumping?

do you mean turn off the boiler switches and turn on the switch that turns on the heating in the house??or do you mean turn on the red button on the boiler?

you say the boiler is working, but you are getting no heat in the rads.

so i think your pump could be stuck. it happens when they are out of use for a while.

if you do not know which switch is for the pump, fine, turn everything on, go into the house and put your ear to the radiator. can you hear water flowing inside it?

theres no sounds at all bar outside at the boiler

can u see the pump? its probably below or behind the boiler

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57 ✭✭sm124

oh right!!ya it's below it theres a red button there that you just push in it's not an on or off one though!thanks for all your help i'm not good at this stuff!!

ok well it sounds to me like your pump is stuck from lack of use.

and you say there is no sound in the radiators of water pumping.

do you have a hammer? i think you should go out again , turn everything on, and then give the pump a few very, very, light taps of the hammer. (like cracking an egg, that light) very very light taps because if you hit it hard it will break. the little shock might get the blockage cleared.

(i am not a plumber, nor do i play one on TV), but i did have what sounds like the same problem:)

give that a try and let us know how you get on

Dont start hitting anything with a hammer, as regards the pump undo the centre screw and use a small flathead screwdriver to turn the impeller and see if its stuck if that doesn`t do it get your plumbers back. They`re not at fault if the system was working when they left.

If the boiler runs out of oil, it will go into lockout mode and stop firing, or attempting to fire to prevent damage. The red light on the push button on the side of the burner will then light up, what you are talking about below

Thats the boiler reset and isn't related to the pump. The pump should be the other side of the boiler inline with the pipes.
It should look something like this

Try what DoneDL has said, or else call a plumber.
