In a move that really showcases Hollywood's current obsession with reboots, Joel Silver has been revealed to be nurturing a Lethal Weapon remake.
The original writer of the franchise, Shane Black, wrote a spec script for a fifth film last year and brought it to both Warner Bros. They loved it - as did Silver - so it was sent out to Mel Gibson and Danny Glover for consideration with the note that Black would be directing if it got made - not Richard Donner. Donner wasn't happy, and Gibson refused to take part, deciding to leave the ****e fourth film as his farewell to the series. Then, well, Gibson fell from a personal **** storm into a sewer, and was essentially black-listed in Hollywood. Hence this talk of a reboot penned by newcomer, Will Beall, who Deadline.com are saying wrote the script for the soon to be made Gangster Squad - which attracted serious directing talent when circulated.
Of course if a top drawer director comes on board (or Black who directed the brilliant Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), then it could be a really good action movie. Just with instant character and brand recognition from possible audiences - which is what the studios want.

    What next

    as per dark horizons.

"Joel Silver has hired Will Beall to write the script for the reboot at Warner Bros."
Beall's pitch for the film proposed "a hard R-rated edgy street cop movie" that will relaunch the buddy cop series with a new cast but keep the tone of the original.
Not long ago Warner Bros. Pictures had previously been considering a "Lethal Weapon 5" with a treatment written by original scribe Shane Black, however that ultimately fell through."

    I know very disappointing!

Is this the new Hollywood buzzword for remake now? Talk about a pack of lazy unimaginative assholes. The space between original and remake is getting shorter and shorter, whats next remakes of Avatar and Inception to be made next year?

A remake and a reboot are quite distinct. A remake involves retelling the same story. Where as a reboot implies a franchise or series of films, but apart from the characters and concept it might have very little in common with the original film.

I agree though. Reboots like remakes are becoming far too frequent.

How can they remake this film? If there was ever a case of two actors playing themselves this is it, you can't recast these roles. Leave this classic action movie alone Hollywood you hacks!

Old thread, new information: Chris Hemsworth (Thor) is being tipped to star in Lethal Weapon 5 a.k.a. Lionhunters, which is being described as "a cross between a remake and a sequel":
Chris, best known for playing the hammer-wielding Norse god in the Marvel films, is tipped to play one of the leading characters, rumoured to be the son of an older cop - thought to be Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) - who wants to follow in his father's footsteps.

Fast And Furious director Justin Lin is attached to direct Lionhunters, with Will Beall working on the current version of the script.

Mel and his co-star Danny Glover have not been linked to the upcoming remake, and in past interviews, Mel has denied involvement in any kind of sequel or reboot.

So Chris Hemsworth as Gibson and Russo's characters son, he don't have much charisma to play the role imo

I think Anthony Mackie and Chris Pine would be a good pairing

This sounds terrible!! Hollywood, leave the classics alone!

Didn't even realise this was a possibility, but then why not? Every other franchise has the stink of reboot circling it by. But good to see yet another studio thinking the world wants to watch a 'Son of...' film; what's that Einstein said about the definition of insanity?

As it happens, I saw the very first Lethal Weapon a few weeks back; it's easy to forget how different in tone it is, compared with the more overblown, cartoony sequels. It has a dark streak to it, a rough edge, with Riggs' crippling depression a grounding element to the action (which itself is tame compared to maniacal pacing of the later films). Equally, it's funny hearing things like those cheesy saxophone stings and remembering that Lethal Weapon invented that trope :)

LW 1 and 2 are classics. The ending of LW 2 with Murtagh holding a wounded Riggs on the ship while "Knockin on Heavens Door" is playing is a defining memory of childhood for me. There is a notable drop in quality for LW 3, and LW 4 feels strangely disconnected from the series, almost like a parody of itself.

Personally, I'd love to see a good buddy cop movie series take off, especially if it is done well and in the style of 80s movies with real practical special effects and strong characters. If they need to slap a Lethal Weapon logo on the poster to sell extra seats, so be it. For me - quality is the most important.

Still a little apprehensive about this though.

The first to were brilliant and probably should have been left at that.

Saying that Joe Pesci's character was great in it.

God help us when they try to remake Back to The Future.

    And it WILL happen

Maybe they'll remake Shawshawk Redemption too and have Andy and the warden quoting sharia law from the Quran, and have Andy in his office playing this over the intercom system.

He definitely would deserve an extra month in solitary for that.

Don't get the shock at x being remade. Simple reality is that people are going to watch these, including a good chunk of the people lamenting the fact that their childhood classic is being rebooted. Heard so many Robocop fans whinging about the remake yet so many parted ways with their money to go see it.
