Buyers rights?

Where does the buyer stand in this scenario?
My nextdoor neighbour decided to downgrade from a 03 Petrol Passat, to a 99 Diesel Seat Cordoba. He found one advertised and travelled to Hueston station to meet the seller.
Car looked good, taxed, NCT. Buyer says nothing wrong with car. Not sure if he took it for a test drive(Brazilian guy, English not great) Cash handed over and then the problems started. Pretty much straight away the clutch starts to act up, limped the car back to Galway because the seller had disappeared and not answering the phone.
    Clutch has now been replaced,€700.
Yesterday I spotted him down the road with the bonnet up scratching his head, car now in the garage.
I feel so sorry for him because he always takes such good care of his cars then someone sells him a ball of scrap, just seems he should have some comeback on this.

Nothing you can do, private seller, no comeback.

What does he expect from a 12 year old car? Sorry.

What he expects is some honesty from the seller and not to be relieved of his money before being left to repair the car

I thought so, but I hate to see the fecker get away with it.

Clutches are wear items. They're going to be needed to be replaced eventually.

Sorry about the car but I don't think he has a comeback. Should have checked car out properly before handing the dosh over.
Hopefully he can get it back on the road soon and it was cheap to start with.

Yeah I think its a case of a lesson hard learned. Its just unfortunate he was trying to save some money now the bills are mounting and he's off the road.

I dont mean to sound negative but clutch issues should be obvious from an initial test drive.
Thats what I was thinking but he's not giving me the impression he gave it a test drive.

That's insane - my best advice to you is to stay well clear of the whole thing.

He should of test drove the car. Never take anything on face value... and if you know nothing about cars bring someone along who does.

He must of been really stuck for a diesel car to travel from Galway to Dublin. I am sure he could of found something a little closer to home.

Carry on like that buying cars and the chances are you'll be caught sooner rather than later.

700 euros for a clutch for a crap car like that was he mad or what that job should have been 450 tops that garage should be named and shamed and reported as well

Just found out, the test drive happened "after" cash was handed over, the seller stayed with the buyers wife while the buyer went for a drive.
Started looking fishy when then seller jumped in his mates car and took off, leaving the neighbours wife waiting by the road.
Kind of loosing sympathy for him.

AH MAN!! why did he go for the test drive AFTER the payment was made? Always go for the drive first, and if you don't know about cars, get a mechanic or someone who knows about cars to check her out first.I feel bad for him, but you have to be careful when buying private and he has no comeback.Lesson learned I hope.

The seller actually text him back, he said "sorry its not my problem anymore and I'm moving to London at the weekend!
The poor fecker suffers from depression and now he's without a car for his kids birthday at the weekend, talk about learning a lesson!
