    Hi all,

I am a student in my last year of a Finance & Acc degree. I have received training on a fairly basic accounts package but feel that it is an inferior package.

I plan to train myself up on a more mainstream package. Which should I be looking at in terms of the best/most used package in an accounting firm? (Sage, SAP, etc.)

    Many thanks for any advice,

    Rob.

If you are looking at working in the UK SAGE is worth looking at

That is a little hard to answer, Accounting applications are built for different markets and are typically divided into tiers.

Tier 1 would be applications for very large organizations (usually multi-nationals) - SAP and Oracle are the biggest players here

Tier 2 would be applications for large organizations (can also be multi-nationals, but usually not) - players here would be Agresso, Sun Systems etc

Tier 3 would be smaller organizations and this sector is wide open in terms of applications - Pegasus Opera, SAP business one (possibly low tier 2 high tier 3), Sage etc.

Not sure what apps would be used in an accounting firm though ?

From my experience SAP, Sun etc are used in industry mainly.

    Accountancy practices and samll/medium firms

TAS, Quickbooks, Sage Line 50, Sage Accounts Production

For SMEs, I reckon Sage 50 or TASbooks is the most popular here.

Sage 50 development has come along in leaps and bounds lately with some nice addons (eg sage manufacturing), new report designer that many other packages simply don't have.

    Hi

Another one to mention would be Intact Sotware, www.intact.ie. Very easy to use and very customisable to suit a broad variety fo businesses

Start with Sage Line 50, quite popular and once you can use it, it's not a big jump to other packages.

In accounting practices outside of Big 4, Sage Accounts Production is probably the market leader with Relate Software's offering quite popular.

OP the most popular systems in use by small businesses are TAS, Quickbooks, Big Red Books, and sometimes Sage, although the latter only where the accountant / bookkeeper has moved from a company where they used Sage. In practises, the market leader is Sage Accounts Production, with Relate coming second, but there are a few other packages such as CCH. If I were you I would look at getting experience in Sage Accounts Production, even if you have to work for nothing in a practise for 1-2 weeks, but get to use the package.
