Open a terminal (it should be in one of the main menus, depending on what Linux version is installed) and type firefox and Enter. Does some error message come up?

I'll be following this thread to see if anyone can solve this problem :)

Are you using Linux as well? If so, what distribution?

Thanks Captain Morgan, I didn't realise that it's possible to put windows on it as it is built as a Linux machine. Was it a hard job to do?

It's very likely Windows XP will run fine on that hardware. There isn't any "Linux only" hardware. Any machine that runs Linux will usually run Window as well.

From what I hear, Linpus is not a very good OS anyway. I would advise you to install Lubuntu, which is a very good Linux OS. You may be happier using Windows, but I don't think it's a very good solution if your main activity is web browsing. Moving to Windows XP would be a massive downgrade in security.

If you're only using the machine for browsing and other web based stuff then you've really done a great disservice to your relative.

Moving from Linux to Windows XP is a massive security downgrade. You could have found a better solution, like install a better Linux OS or reinstall Firefox.

Not to mention, most likely (though not definitively) illegal. It's difficult to buy XP now and the most common source is old OEM licenses that restrict the license to the original hardware it was purchased with.

I'm not familiar with Linpus, but I Googled around for it and it doesn't seem like a very good version of Linux. It seems that it's technically Linux but with many limitations you wouldn't find on other distributions. I would recommend maybe installing some kind of Ubuntu over it, if you want to try out Linux.

There was an optimised version of Ubuntu floating round for a while called Linux4one - not sure if its still available but I used the first version and it ran like a dream apart from the fact that the repositories were Karmic ones so things got pretty out of date.

Running Meerkat on it now with no problems apart from hot swapping one of the sd card readers (can't remember which one) doesn't work but an SD card will be picked up in that slot anyway if its in at boot.

Had also tried Mint 10 before Meerkat but had issues with the wifi dropping out and taking my router with it.

Could be a missing/mismatched shared library issue with firefox. You didn't upgrade/update any programs, have you? I have had problems with libnss and xulrunner following an update before, so drop to a terminal and type in the following:
    ldd /usr/bin/firefox

Then paste the output back here so we can work from the ground up.

This is almost certainly just a problem with the firefox profile, as updates for linpus haven't been available in some time for those machines.
Still worth checking with 'ldd' though, as if that gives an error, nothing else will work!
I have an Acer Aspire One myself - originally with linpus and love the display.
Linpus didn't stay on it very long though, it never really delivered for me.
Mine is currently running Jolicloud - fantastic upgrade from what it came with.

@lorweld, CTRL-ALT-T often opens a terminal on those distributions.

If not, try right-clicking on the desktop, and see if Terminal is listed in the options.
Finally, if neither of those work, pressing ALT-F2 may bring up a 'Run' dialog,
and you could try typing terminal into that.

Seriously recommend you download jolicloud though, and stick it on a USB stick.
You can try it out to see if you like it before installing it., but it'll bring your browser up to date and give your little acer a brand new future!

Hello guys, Im having the exact same problem with my acer Aspire one, linpus linux v1.0.21.E , BIOS version v0.3310. The internet browser will not open up:confused:

When I hit Alt + f2 I can open the terminal. I then type ldd/usr/bin/firefox and I get this message '' No such file or directory '' I then re-type it but this time I put a space after the ldd and I get this message '' not a dynamic executable

I would like to try and figure this out myself but if not ill get someone to load jolicloud onto it for me as niallb recommended.

    Thanks all

upgrade to the nebook edition of ubuntu 10.04. Linplus is ancient at this stage :D

I'd agree with Landyman that the 10.04 version of netbook remix is the better one to go for.
The updates introduced in netbook remix 10.10 ruined ubuntu (NBR) for these machines.

@Richard Tea. The space is correct between ldd and the rest of the command.
The problem is that /usr/bin/firefox is just a link - a shortcut if you like - to the actual firefox program.
Even that is just a script.

The file you need to check for peace of mind will be called firefox-bin
and depending on your version will most likely be in /usr/lib/firefox-[some-version]/
