Mid air near miss or not

    Guys

    I was on the way to work this morning when i seen this

    Not sure what was happening but looked like a near miss with 2 planes could be totally wrong .

    What do people think ?

    I think it looks like an aircraft that turned left.

    You can see the second flying along the vapour trail of the one that turned .

    Just one aircraft turning left with another slighter higher airliner following the same routing. Avoiding action would have just meant an altitude change. On board TCAS, Traffic Collision Avoidance System, would alert both aircraft and over Ireland ATC would have them on radar.

    Just someone setting course for their destination after coming off an Atlantic track.

    Vertical separation is the primary method of separating aircraft in the same control zone. If you assume the 'apparent' width of the contrail is proportional to the height of the a/c, then you can assume they are thousand of feet apart (vertically separated).

    I know this is completely wrong by the 2nd picture to me screamed of evasive manoeuvres with the enemy aircraft following behind on an intercept and kill mission! I have been playing too much video games! :rolleyes:

    Passenger jets dont make turns as sudden as seen in that pic do they?

    It wouldn't be sudden, in fact if you were on board you wouldn't even notice the turn unless you were looking out the window at the time.

    The thing to remember also that the photo represents a period of several minutes not seconds.

    It's as I said earlier simply a turn on track after coming off the North Atlantic route, perhaps routing towards Scandinavia.

    I dont agree at all that what we see there is a gradual turn. Sure the trail in the picture represents many minutes but the complete turn as shown there would have been completed in a short time. Given that it is quite a significant turn, Im certain its far from normal. I have never in my life seen a turn so rapid as that.
    How long do you think it would have taken to complete that change of direction as shown there?

    I dunno,maybe it has descended and the varying winds aloft make the trails to look more drastic than they are

    It looks like an a tight turn,however id like to see a photo of the time the aircraft was making the turn,i suspect it was'nt that tight.Mind you,its rare to see one like that in the photo.Do you know the time on the 21st you took that at? i was going to pop on Casper to see the type etc etc?

    It's not as tight a turn as it looks. On first glance it looks like 90 degree turn but on closer inspection its more like 45-50 degrees which is normal (obviously). Aircraft is getting further and further away as can be seen by the pic. It's the perspective that makes it looking rather tight.
    Any way, I'm afraid to disapoint those wearing tin foil hats but there is nothing abnormal going on.

    Assuming a normal rate 1 turn a 90 deg change in direction would take 30 seconds to complete. It is a good picture but it looks normal to me. Don't forget the slant range that the contrail is from the camera. All is these illusions will play tricks on the eye!

    Because if they say "near hit" or near collision, it'd kind of freak people out, eg. two aircraft had a near hit - reaction AHHHHH... two aircraft had a near miss today - reaction oh my that was lucky
