I've heard now is a good time to turn over the sod on a wild area of the garden so that the roots of weeds are exposed to the drying winds and frosts, thus the soil is "sterilised" for when seeding time comes.

Sounds like a good idea - anyone done it?

The colder temps are good for breaking down soil, weed seed on the otherhand is most likely dormant and will be largely unaffected. I would expect weed to germinate as soon as temps improve.
