Range Rover TD6 tuning.

I just managed to get a nice RR TD6 2005 with low milage. The test drive was kinda lame as I thought the Salesman was going to cry or jump out if I pushed the jeep any harder.

Anyway the short of it is the 3.0 TD6 is lacking in power for the weight of the RR but tuning is an option.

    Tuning Box or Remap?

I'm siding with remap but I don't know of any tuners in Leinster that would do custom remaps. I don't want any generic crap in there.

    Any help or suggestions?

Definitely remap, tuning boxes are a bad idea, they just fool injectors into squirting more fuel in. I suspect you'll struggle to find a tuner here for the Rangie.

The well known UK Land Rover tuners are

    Thanks Sean101.

I knew I had heard bad things about the tuning box solution.

    I found these: http://www.mfkautocare.com/ecu-remapping-service/

They said they would do a custom re-map and I'd have two weeks trial for a full refund. Two weeks really isn't enough to troubleshoot but it's cheaper than a UK trip.

Most of those UK tuners are looking for agents, shame no-one here has taken them up.

Nice looking website anyway, as long as they appreciate you need to keep bottom end torque with a Land Rover and don't ramp up exhaust gas temperatures too much. If they are any good, they should listen to what you want rather than just dump a tune on your ECU. Have a scan through Jeremy Fearn's site to give you an idea what to look for.

Keep us posted anyway as this has come up a few times lately.

I had a tuning box in my TD6 for a few months. I took it out because it made the drive very jerky. These RR's, as you know, are not a performance machine. They're more of a smooth easy going truck.

I picked mine up today :D. Smiling like a right muppet all day.

There is a good deal of power as it has been serviced between test drive and today and you can feel the difference. My test drive had me a bit worried.

Anyway, I do know that the RR is not a performance machine but I have re-mapped before and the improvements were great. What I am trying to get is some more fuel efficiency and with a 3.0 turbo diesel, 177bhp is below what it should easily produce. I have been reading the UK sites and all the proper re-map reviews mention smoother drive and less revs due to the increased power. Also less gear changes which again adds to the smooth drive.

Whatever you do, make sure that the engine breather is changed at least every 20k or you'll blow the turbo. The TD6 is a fine engine when you follow the service intervals. Use good oil every 10K. Change g/box oil & filter every 20K (even though they say it's sealed for life). I've done 120k miles in mine. I'd be interested in remapping allright if there was no downside. Why doesn't it get full power from the factory first day

Land Rover, like most others tune them for reliability, avoiding warranty issues, dealing with all grades of fuel etc etc so the fuel maps are a compromise. I have a Nanocom diagnostic tool that comes with loads of standard Td5 maps for different markets. There's a lot more you get out of them without damage with a decent tune.

I wish I had the cash for a bigger intercooler, hybrid turbo and a remap for my Td5 but I don't think it will happen soon.
