    Hello Boarders,

I am due to go to England with work for a yr full time. I heard somewhere that if I bought a car over there and had it for a certain amount of time, say 6 months, before returning home I would not have to Pay VRT.

Is this true?... If I keep the receipts etc for it....

You are correct, you must have owned it and used it abroad for at least 6 months before moving back to Ireland. You'll need to show it was owned by you and road legal i.e. taxed and insured for at least 6 months.

The exemption does not apply to certain situations such as living abroad for study.

You'll have to prove residence there :)
Utility bills in your name etc. I worked in the UK for a while, work put us up in hotels etc, one lad bought a car, letter off work along with his credit card statements etc showing he was actually living there were fine in his case. That was 6/7 years ago.

You need to have lived in the uk for at least a year and owned the car for the last six months:

    From here:

"You do not qualify for relief from VRT... if you were working abroad on a task of duration of less than one year and your personal ties remained in the State."

I gather you need to provide a lot of documentation to prove residence in the uk. Not sure what's meant by "personal ties" though.
