iPod restore freezing

I just bought an iPod Touch 4g. It was working fine until I connected it to iTunes and opted to update the iPod to the latest version. The progress bar goes right to the end but it never finishes. It got disconnected while syncing and I am worried this damaged the device

Is there a way to restore it manually?

EDIT: Itunes recognises the device is in recovery mode but it won't complete the restore to factory settings

Have you left it for a while while trying to sync? Sometimes it tends to take a while towards the end.

You could try putting the iPod into DFU mode. That could help. To do that you must: power off the device. hold the sleep button and the home button for 10 seconds, then remove your finger from the sleep button and hold in the home button for 10 secs. So, hold the sleep for 10 and the home for 20 seconds.

Here's a video how to do it.

Tried DFU but it keeps displaying the connect to iTunes logo. I left it syncing for 30 mins, I'll leave it in longer and see

To put it in DFU mode (before following the above's instructions) you must:

Make sure the device is powered off.
Have it connected to the PC.

I think it's bricked. I can get it into DFU mode but it still won't update. I even tried jailbreaking and the same thing happens.

    It's 99% definitely not bricked.

Are you sure you're trying to restore it to the correct IPSW? The filenname should be:

    iPod4,1_4.2.1_8C148_Restore.ipsw

I'll download that one and give it a go. I was using a slightly older iOS. I have the receipt if it is. Only got it yesterday.

I tried that iOS IPSW package. The device still froze near the end of the progress bar. I left it for over an hour.
