Venues for gig renting with 80 cap.?

Im looking for any venues up for rental in Dublin city with around an 80 capacity. Theyre difficult enough to find - the venues listed in the sticky of this thread are a little outdated (considering dorans is gone as well as voodoo). Most venues Ive tried are running around 150 capacity which my band unfortunately wouldnt be able to fill yet. The Cobblestone in Smithfield is the only one Ive come across. Anybody have any recommendations?

This would also be a good thread for anybody starting out - venue rental and selling your own tickets always seems to be the way to go, and 80 cap. isnt a bad achievement, even if half the audience is the support acts.

    Maybe try upstairs in Whelans

your probably best off putting yourself down as the support act in the downstairs part of whelans, organising and promoting it yourself (so as to gain a bit of an income) and pay a larger well known band to do the main act.

if your a 5 piece band with drums up stairs in whelans may be too small

Thanks. By putting yourself down for a support act, you mean knowing a band who can fill out whelans downstairs and rent it out? We're def happier doing the promotion ourselves. Yeah, 5 piece - that could be a problem alright. The problem at the mo is we wouldnt know that many bands who could headline in that way.

Know any venues where you could put down being available as support?

We do like the whole venue rental idea, but really dont want to play to a half empty pub. There has to be more small cap venues that can hold a 5 piece band...

Whelans upstairs is 120 cap apparently. The prices around town now for a night incl soundengineer arent all that bad, def a buyers market. But there doesnt seem to be a proper resource out there for whats available. At least at the low end of the scale, but youd think pubs would be thinking of better ways to advertise theyre open for business.

If I remember correctly they call it the Mezz, its a fantastic room but I've never seen a gig there apart from drum and bass DJ's and other Dj's dunno if an entire band would fit up there. On another note I met Des Bishop up there. A lovely bloke.

i actually know of the mezz. they do small gigs in there & its not too bad, but again its got quite a high body count for crowds, I'd say easily 140.

I think you might be thinking of the Mezz in temple bar which is a venue in itself. The upstairs of Twisted Pepper which goes by the same name would never hold that many people.

No it should be ok. We are an 8 piece band and could fit (with a bit of a squeeze) on the stage in Whelans upstairs. We gigged there before Christmas, great spot.

If you dont want to be seen as "2nd fiddle" so to speak, why not rent a place with a few other bands all sharing the bill with equal slot times?

If every band can bring 50 people, then 3 bands all bringing 50 people is 150 which will make most venues seem fairly buzzing!

If you are going down this route, you can also share the backline to ease the burden further. If you are doing it for money though you may/probably will have to split the money made between the bands once costs are covered though....
