I did it last year... Still working on the thesis though goddamn it!

Anyway they revised the course since I did it so now you get to pick and choose which modules you do.

    Prospective student info here: http://history.nuim.ie/sites/history.nuim.ie/files/images/MA%20in%20MHSS_0.pdf

Alternatively if you want a real feel for what's expected of you class/submissions wise have a look at the postgrad handbook http://history.nuim.ie/sites/history.nuim.ie/files/images/PGHandbook%2010-11_0.pdf

Thesis is between 12,000 to 15,000 words.

What do I expect to get out of it?

Results wise? No idea whatsoever. But I'd like a solid 2.1.
    Career wise? International Warlord.
Emotion wise? No emotions in War.

Sorry to be flippant just not sure what your asking.

Personally I wasn't. I've no interest (bad choice of words considering the MA) in joining up.

There are however members of the Irish Defense Force in the class as the MHSS (Military History and Strategic Studies) department operate certain classes in conjunction with the Department of Defense.

In addition I do know a couple of people that were either out of the army or were using it to join up. I'm sure it would be looked upon favorably.

For me it's a stepping stone to further study, I'm very interested in international relations and specifically how war and conflict impacts international relations.

What is it your hoping to get out of it?

Go with the Coup.. It involves less thesis work!

Best of luck with it anyway!

And if you've any questions give me a shout I'll try not to be too discouraging!

I do this course. It's pretty awesome, and very very interesting. No idea what I'll do after it though. Thesis on nuclear war has given me a very bleak view on humanity though.

What potential employment is there for civilians who have completed this course? I would imagine the opportunities in this country would be quite sparse.

On its own, not a hell of a lot. But you can move conceivably into different courses after in. In Military History, Strategic Studies, International Relations theory, yadda yadda yadda

Yes, but who would hire you in Ireland even if you did additional courses? Do the DF contract civilians in Strategic Studies etc?

You'll find jobs (when there are jobs that is) in the DFA (Dept of Foreign Affairs), Non-Governmental Organisations like Amnesty, think-tanks (peace studies, international relations, nuclear non-proliferation, I know one lad who after doing the course gets paid a ridiculous amount of money to extrapolate what effect a global conflict could have on the price of oil etc.,

You'll find your thesis topic can help you find jobs, if for example like the Observer you do your thesis on Nuclear war then you could end up in a job related to that (not necessarily the manufacturing of nuclear weapons).

It's not a practical course in the sense that they're not going to tell you how to stand in military formation or march you around the place, it is to further your understanding in military history if you wanted to go the military route I imagine such a degree would be hand to have, although knowing very little about army jobs etc., I wouldn't be able to tell you exactly what sort of jobs you were looking at.

Also while I think of it, the DF do contract civilians, you've to be pretty expert in your field, but yes they do. Take Dr. Speller and Dr. Murphy for example who spend a large amount of their time in the Curragh.

You can always try for Dr. Speller's job.. :D

Im planning on applying for this masters, im just finishing a level 8 history degree and I plan to teaching, I missed the application date for the hdip but I think this course should benefit me and give me a upper hand when I do pursue a teaching career. Would yous agree or am I wasting my time?
