I'm guessing your thinking of something like this?
First thing id recommend you do is look for someone in your area who is capable of doing this for you. A fitted kitchen company will usually do this kind of bedroom furniture aswell, or a local carpenter may be able to help you out.
They should then be able to come up with a plan for you based on the measurments of you room. What will work will all depend on the size of your bedroom, location of windows/radiators and the size of your bed.

As regards colour I'd go for something neutral such as a cream or ivory colour unless theres a certain wood colour that would compliment the rest of your house better. As this is built in furniture you'll be stuck with it for a long time so, as temping as it may be go to for bright red or dark walnut, you need to choose something that you'll be able to live with for a long time, wont date too easily and will blend it with other changes you may make to the bedroom in the future.
