Hey, can anyone help me!! I have tried to talk to someone in Revenue and VRT helpline and NCT but to no avail!!!
Does anyone know if you are given a car by a family member in the North, are you exempt from VRT under the rule of inheritance to transfer it down south?
    Any help greatly appreciated! ;)

IMO, VRT needs to be paid.

You still legally own the car, but the VRT - Vehicle REGISTRATION tax, must be paid to register the car on a new Irish registration.

I dont want to sell it, it is being given to me by a family member who lives up North and I want to transfer it down here so I can use it.
There are exemptions from paying the VRT when you bring it down and one of those circumstances is Inheritance so just wondered if the person who gives you the car needs to be dead or not! :-)

Just keep it in north for 6 months ... ? or was it 1 year. Tax it and put insurance on it and after that time you bring it down to south and you pay NO VRT ;)

yeah thought of that but cant do it plus I need to use it down here now.

No. VRT has nothing to do with how you obtained the car, it's a tax payable to register the car here.

why do they tell you you can apply for exemptions then??

So you have "free" car for the price of the VRT... sounds like a bonus.

Where did you read that you can apply for an exemption from VRT on the basis that you inherited the car?

On the nct and revenue website.

    6. Importation of motor vehicles of a deceased person acquired by inheritance, without payment of Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT)

Relief from Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) will be allowed in respect of a motor vehicle which is the personal property of a deceased person which is brought into the State by, or on behalf of, a person resident in the State or a person or body of persons established in the State and engaged in a non-profit making activity, who either acquired the ownership or the beneficial ownership of such property or is the personal representative resident in the State of the deceased person subject to compliance with the provisions in place at the time.

you can only inherit something from a dead person, so a gift would not be exempt from VRT.

The exemptions are probably for the likes of cars that are adapted for special needs (disabilities etc)

I will put my neck out and say that 100% you can't legally bring this car in with out paying the VRT.

The main exemption is for someone moving residence to ireland and has previously owned the car outside the juristriction for 6 months or more.

My wife did this a number of years ago after moving home from the UK (where she was for four years). She brought back two cars that she legally owned in the UK and I can tell you the amount of supporting documentation and questions she was asked made it nearly impossible for her to do it .. even though she was 100% legit.

It didn't help that one was a high value car purchased 7 months prior to her moving home and it probably did rouse the suspicions of the VRT office.

Sounds pretty clear that they need to be deceased to me?

    .

This is true.. I lived in the UK for all my life before I came here - never knew I was going to have to prove that some "road tax" guy. It was amazing what they needed to see just so I could bring in my family car! Not that they are funny or rude - they are very professional and stick to the same rules for everyone.
