First of all my location is 200 metres from the coast -Clogherhead area in Louth.
I'd like to have a proper attempt if possible at getting a Freeview signal.
Here are my 'as the crow flies distances'.
As far as I know I receive my Irish digitals from Clermont Carn which is 22miles.
My Freeview options (or not) are to the best of my knowledge
    Divis -57miles
    Brougher Mountain 68 miles.
    Llanddona 92miles
Maybe I'm too far away but just thought there was no harm in trying.
Maybe something high gain would do the trick?
At the minute I'm getting 70% strength in the attic with a crappy grid type aerial. Check out the picture.
If possible I like aerial that'd pick up both but not sure what the deal is with aerial groups etc.
    Thanks in advance.

Try us here in the Isle of Mann. Point aerial north east. Group B vertical channels 43, 46 (BBC) and 50 (HD channels, if you have Freeview HD tv/box, DVB-T2). You should have clear line of sight from your location (63mls). I'm picking up Three Rock from here but then again, it's on more power than Port St Mary TX. IOM TXs only Freeview Lite though unlike Divis and Winter Hill which you may also get from NW England. Group C/D H

    Good luck!

    Saorview

    Clermont Carn (Channel 53)

    Freeview

Now, probably Divis. Not yet on full power afaik.

Kilkeel (not until end 2012/start 2013) for the future.

C/D for Clermont Carn, dont know about Kilkeel.

Maybe you would be better to stick with the Wideband UHF (that you already have in that grid) to keep all your options open for the future.

Yup in theory,if you want this now the isle of man should work in the same way arfon works further south.
    You are nearer.
Divis for the full service probably or kilkeel later.
You must have your aerial outside though.
Get a good unix 100 for that and amp it.
Combine it outside with the grid which outside will continue to be fine for saorview at CC.

Got a price on a Unix100 from my local retailer at 105euro. Does this sound right? Seems steep. That doesn't include any amps.
What sort of masthead amps do I need anyway?

Was having a look at these.

Would either of these do the trick?

Not sure about a Unix 100 but I've seen Antiference XG16 for less than €60 (cpc) or 2 x Antiference TCX18 would be less than €50 (ex. delivery).
I'm not too clear on the technicalities of combining aerials but the actual combiners are fairly inexpensive.

Those Unix 100s seem to pop up in clearance sales fairly frequently, though. Think they were only ever popular with installers trying to impress gullible customers ('big is better') rather than actual effectiveness; there's no real market for them.

A pair of 18 element (sometimes called 50 element) SR18 or similar is very cheap and in reality similar performance to one big aerial.

you need a splitter as a combiner, suitable spacing and identical lengths of coax. Splitter as combiner close to Mast pre-amp
