My eldest will be 9 soon and judging by the islabikes charts is ready for a 26 inch wheel small frame. She isn't ready for drop bars and 23c wheels yet though. Any thoughts on trying to get the lightest possible. Islabikes come in around 12kg and carrera in halfords 13.5. She doesn't need a front mech really or suspension. Seems a bit rough compared to my bikes though and is proportionately very heavy for her. Any thoughts appreciated please?

The Luath 24 is 9.3kg. It takes 32mm tyres and has interrupter levers, so just like a flat bar with curly bits on the ends. Go on, you know you want to ;)

Honestly, depends how it's going to get used. If it's just for flinging around the place wouldn't a BMX do the job?

My friend got one from Islabikes for his nine year old daughter.
Have to say I thought it was fabulous bike, very well put together.
I know that she loves it anyway. Don't know the exact weight but it seemed reasonable to me.

Got the Luath Small for my eldest (12) and it's been a great success so far.

The other option is Decathlon - I was in their shop in Belfast last week and they seem to have a decent supply of kids bikes - not sure about quality or any other issues.

This one looks a good bet.....

Thanks for advice. The luath with wider 32c tyres and the brake adaptors looks perfect. She can then use her old bike for flinging around. It does seem hard to beat the Isla bikes. All the others seem heavy which wouldn't be good if she starts coming out with me and then overtaking me

A lot of kids bikes seem to be very heavy.

I ordered the luath 26 with standard tyres and I'll put a wider set on if needed. They seem the best option for kids if they want to try more than 10k rides. Thanks for advice. The fact that others here have bought one was good enough for me. Thanks again
