Has anybody done the LLB in NUIG???

    Hi

Im just looking for people that have done the one yera LLB in NUIG. I was onto the law faculty today but they could not seem to answer some of my questions. I am eligible to proceed to final year of the LLB. I know that I have to do 66 ECTS including the 'essay'. My question is whether there are any compulsory modules and whether I can pick ANY module provided it is of 12 ECTS. Also, what does the 'essay' involve? I presume there is just one to complete? How many words should it be and what are the topics generally?

Also, are there any additional assignments per module or do exams account for 100% of the mark? I am in the first year of modular degree course in Kings Inns so I wouldn’t necessarily have the time to attend classes at NUIG. Do you think I would get away with never turning up for lectures and tutorials and just turn up for the exams? It might sound strange but the only reason why I am doing the LLB is so I can sit the NY Bar exams.

My question is basically can I do this course with minimal effort whilst completing the Bar exams and holding down a full time job? I am not too worried about the exams for the LLB in April or May because I reckon I could get them deferred until August when I will (hopefully) be called to the Bar and will have more time on my hands to prepare for them

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Legalpuzzler,

I did the LLB in NUIG IN 07/08, I worked full time whilst doing it and just chose the subjects that had lecture times after 6pm. I am not too sure you could get away with not attending to be honest. There are exams at Christmas as well as May and they do stand for 100% of the mark as far as I remember.

As far as I remember and my memory is a bit foggy here but I don't think there were any compulsory modules.

The essay is fine...just a normal assignment nothing major.

However, I don't think you could do it without some effort or attendance to be honest but just my opinion.

My question is whether there are any compulsory modules and whether I can pick ANY module provided it is of 12 ECTS.
There are compulsory modules but they depend on the modules that you have already sat as an undergrad. Basically, between your undergrad and LL.B, you must have taken Company I & II, Constitutional Law, Contract, Criminal, Tort and Land I & II. For example, if you have a B.Corp, then you must sit Land and Criminal.

Modules are 6 ECTS and 12 ECTS. It doesn't matter what you take, as long as you have covered the compulsory modules.
Also, what does the 'essay' involve? I presume there is just one to complete? How many words should it be and what are the topics generally?
I think the essay is 5,000 words. You are required to chose an essay from one of your classes. Each lecturer sets out 3-5 essays and you do whatever one you want! If you look at the NUIG law website now, you'll be able to find a link to this years essays.
Also, are there any additional assignments per module or do exams account for 100% of the mark?
Some modules like IT Law, Consumer Law, Jurisprudence, EU Competition law have additional assignments or presentations.
I am in the first year of modular degree course in Kings Inns so I wouldn’t necessarily have the time to attend classes at NUIG. Do you think I would get away with never turning up for lectures and tutorials and just turn up for the exams?
Hmmmm. Well, you'd definitely need to explain this to the Law School. If all you're looking for is a pass mark, then probably yes you could skip all the lectures and tutorials. I'd say the Law School would be helpful if you explained your situation to them. Your lecturers might be open to you sending them regular emails/telephone calls etc. if you had problems.
My question is basically can I do this course with minimal effort whilst completing the Bar exams and holding down a full time job?
Bar exams plus full time job plus LL.B? If you're Superman, then maybe!
I am not too worried about the exams for the LLB in April or May because I reckon I could get them deferred until August when I will (hopefully) be called to the Bar and will have more time on my hands to prepare for them
I won't bet on getting a deferral for the exams just because you're working and doing the bar. They are quite strict about allowing people to defer one exam, never mind the whole set!

I'am currently doing the one year LLB with the intention of doing the Bar exams in August. I did Corporate Law before this. In relation to being able to pass the exams with as little attendance as possible I would be positive in this regard and believe that you most certainly could. I attend my lectures with the belief that my attendance will help me get my 1.1 but I believe with a good study attitude and determination a 2.1 in subjects such as Land Law,Equity and a few others is accessible without ever having been in a lecture.
Some subjects such as Jurisprudence include semesterised essays and 10% goes towards attendance but I believe that there are ways around this.Anyway if you have any other questions let me know.Hope this helps in some regard.

Hey Fergywergy, just a quick question for yourself because I notice you said you intend to do the Bar exams in August. Are you doing Administrative law in the L.L.B in order to fullfill Kings Inns requirements? I am currently attending Administrative Law Part I which will allow me to sit the entrance exams in August

Yes I studied Admin Law 1 last semester in order to meet the necessary requirements.

Hi thanks all that info. For the avoidance of any doubt, is it just one essay from any module or one essay for every module? Im not really too pushed about getting 2.1's or 2.2's or any of that. The only reason why I am doing the LLB is because I am going to sit the New York Bar exams once I have finished my Bar exams. I work in the legal department of a large american financial services company and its more or less agreed that when I qualify I can transfer to the New York head office.

Im not really too concerned about lecture notes or anything like that because I can just rely on my Kings Inns 2010 Diploma notes. Besides, the Kings Inns Degree course requires you to have up to date knowledge of the subjects that I am going to pick. I reckon I will opt to do Tort, Contract, Constitution, Evidence and Criminal which are all 12 ECTS so I can sit them at the end of the year in August. I am sure that I will find a sympathetic doctor who will certify me as being 'stressed' when it comes to doing the exams in April or May so that I can get them deferred until August ;)

Can any body tell me what the standard for the exams is like? I dont plan on wingin it all together...i reckon 4-6 weeks study from June or July to August should be enough to pass them at least. What are NUIG like for deferring exams??

I take it that there are no restrictions on what subjects you can choose? Should I have any probs taking tort, contract, criminal, evidence and EU law? I sat all of those in the entrance exams in August, with the execption of EU law because I did Constitution (but im not studying that sh*te again!) and found them ok. Im eager to find out more about this 'essay'...

    Hi All,

Could anybody tell me what positions graduates of this course can apply for or is this course more of a stepping stone to further study ?

    Thanks in advance

Hi, just wondering can you use a Legal Studies BA as a stepping stone to the LLB degree??
