Trying to play one of my files, its a mk4 file, I downloaded mkvtovob and it changed it too .mpg.I set up windows Media player on my laptop (windows 7),it sees the files but wont play it,just comes up with a black screen.

Other files on this work, even hd files but this wont. The file size is 11gigs on the .mkv and 9 on the .mpg.I have a wired connection to the router and other files seem to work.I downloaded gotsent but when I load the file it crashs. The file is also stored on a usb hard drive,it is a nfts and the ps3 wont read it.

    Any thoughts on this guys?

mk4 is an old spreadsheet file. So your trying are you tying stream this then why do you need to convert it most good streaming programs(not windows Media player) would work straight away with mkv. no file that large would work on a PS3 locally off a HD the only way that could work is with a nas connected to the ps3.

PS3 won't read any file on nfts so no files over 4GB.

Try the original file with ps3 media server and when you are converting the decision to use mkvtovod or gotsent with the ps3 is based on the audio channels and file container so if you have 5.1 or greater on this that would be messed up anyway if using the wrong one.

its a mkv,I want to watch it on the tv through the ps3 so have to stream it,without losing much quailty in it.I was useing WMP but doesnt play that file, and gotsent just crashs when I load the file.

Don't use WMP use another streamer such as PS3 media server and you won't need to convert or change the container beforehand.

WMP doesn't play the original 11GB mkv file or the 8GB you converted to?

it sees the file allright but wont play it.

Will the ps3 play a file 11gigs or do I have to break it down,(3, 4gig files)Ill get that ps3 media sever aswell.

    edit
I understand that the ps3 doesnt read NFTS hard drives and my hard drive is not pluged into the PS3.

    +1 to ps3mediaserver.

No messing about with codecs and it should carry out any necessary transcoding work on the fly with minimum fuss. With ps3mediaserver you'll be able to stream practically any file you want at whatever size to the PS3 although you'll definitely need that wired connection if you want to stream 1080p files which, given the size of the file you're talking about, I'd assume it is.
