Which ticket to buy?

    Hi
I'm moving up to Dublin this week to start a job and I was looking on the Dublin Bus website to see what ticket I would use whilst living in Dublin.

I can't decide between an Adult 30 Day Bus/Luas ticket or to down the prepaid smartcard route? I have to take 2 different buses to get to work in the morning (both €1.80) and the same back.

If anyone could give some advice about which ticket I should get I would greatly appreciate it.

Also can you use the Smartcard on the Luas or do you need a separate ticket? Apologises if these questions seem stupid.

30 day adult rambler Bus & Luas €118 works out €3.93 per day. Thats cheaper then paying €1.80 for four buses.

If you just want bus only €105 for 30 days - €3.50 per day

At the moment there is no current top up and go smartcard available for DB, or for all modes of transport (IE the dart and the luas are both separate cards you have to top in their own right). You save 10% on Luas standard fares when you use the smartcard for single luas journeys

Thanks, that has made it a lot clearer for me.

Ask your new job if they'll offer you a tax saver ticket. They can be great value, for more info go to taxsaver.ie

Note that some tickets need specific ID.

If you only use the bus Mon-Fri, and are primarily motivated by price, then buy 10-packs of Travel 90 tickets at €18.50. As long as you board the 2nd bus within 90 minutes of the first, you don't have to pay again with these tickets. So, it'd only cost roughly €82 per month. Then just get a smartcard for the Luas, assuming infrequent use.

I'll borrow this thread if I may, as my question is the same as the title..

My annual bus/rail ticket is expiring soon, and I'm not buying a new one. I mostly use the bus on weekdays, but also take the train maybe once or twice a week (mostly weekends). Bus/rail short hop for 30 days is €119, but the better option seems to be the 30 day rambler ticket for €105 as that would pretty much last me 6 working weeks. Are there daily train tickets available? Couldn't find any on irishrail.ie at least. 1 day short hops are €10.70 which sounds pretty poor value.

There is an pay as you go Irish Rail smart card that charges half the return fare for singles - its saves you 10-20c on city journeys.

To my mind if you are only using the tram or train occasionally (one return journey one day per week for example), buy the appropriate LUAS or Irish Rail smartcard, and get a bus only commuter ticket.

If you're using more than mode every day get the appropriate multi-mode commuter ticket (eg bus/rail, bus/luas, rail/luas).

There are one day LUAS only and one day rail only tickets too (even if the latter is not on the Irish Rail website!!).

The one day rail ticket is EUR 8.30.

Irish Rail smartcard sounds good, thanks. I've got a LUAS smartcard already, so getting an Irish Rail equivalent too seems to be the best option in my case.
