He found it prob in the 70s when digging foundations and over the years it got put away and forgotten about, however it resurfaced recently and he wants to find out some info about it.

So does anybody have any idea where he'd start looking?

A little bit of info on it, it's about 18" long from end of the handle to the tip of the sword.
It has quite an unusual handle, in that it goes perpendicular to the sword, if that makes sense, a bit like a flat topped "A" shape? It is only big enough for a woman's hand, and a small woman's hand at that.

It's not very ornate and is rusted and a bit of the handle is missing, so not exactly in great condition but possibly very old..

I can put up a pic or 2 if anyone wants!

its a dagger rather than a sword. i think its from India or from one of the arab countries.

    Its an Indian Katar .
An assassain's thrusting dagger , very interesting , but common enough and of no value in that condition .
(you dont have to mention the lack of value to your old man of course :))

    How old is it ? ........ dunno , 18th century maybe .
they can be really ornate items , and the more valuable ones have a scissors action blade , which splits into 3 blades when the handle is squeezed .

    nice find !

    From wikipedia
After India was colonised by the British, numerous katara were made for the European collectors' market which placed little value on functionality. Among these were the scissors katara with two or three blades that folded together, appearing to be one, until the handle bars were pressed together, when they opened out. These novelty weapons were popular among foreigners but were impractical in actual combat. For example, the blades couldn't be opened after they are thrusted into an opponent's body. More importantly, if they were wielded with the blades opened, all the force of the blow would have to be absorbed by the hinge-pins at the root of the blades.
