You need the cert if doing it in a motor tax office or by post, but only the policy no. if doing it online.

They won't even ask for the cert even if doing it in a tax office, the policy number is sufficient.

This is correct - I was just there today. The "lovely helpful girl with the engaging charming character" didn't even look at me never mind the docs I had.

She grunted..."dat'll be fortee-tree euro den"...

Off I went tax disc in hand.

I must look dishonest so - i'm pretty sure they looked for my cert the last time I made a personal appearance!

Was it your first time taxing the car? That's the only time they've asked me for the cert :)

It will all depend on who you get and what mood there in and you know what mood that is..;)

Alright cheers lads, it will be my first time taxing this car so im going to wait for the insurance disc to arrive.

And you don't even need the policy number when taxing online.
I lazily used a random bunch of letters and digits in the policy field which the motor tax online site accepted no problem.

both forms, the manual and renewal with pin on it have a section for entering the insurance details. You no longer need to send the insurance cert. The only thing you need to sent is the DOE cert for a commerical.

You can tax on line using the last 6 digits of your cars VIN no.

AFAIK thats for first time taxing only and not for normal renewal. The PIN is on the renewal form that you get from the tax office.

You can now request a PIN online from their website:

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

    Is that site even genuine?

That only applies to the first taxing of a brand new car. If the OP is taxing a used car that he's just bought and transferred the ownership of, it won't work. He will, however, be able to tax it online from the first renewal onwards.

And the Motor Tax online site isn't linked to any insurance database, you can put your policy number as 123456789XX for all the difference it makes.
