Should I upgrade my ps3 phat 40 gb firmware 3.15? I ask in this forum as I intend to hack the console.

I am going to have to replace the blu ray drive on it or the laser as it's not reading discs at the moment.

    Thanks

you can fully update to latest firmware 3.55, and then install a custom firmware on top of it

Ah that's great news, someone told me I shouldn't upgrade as I won't be able to hack it on the newest firmware. So I should just upgrade to sony's newest firmware and then install the cfw?

yes you can, check out all your options tho, becareful, i didnt install a cfw, i just jailbroke it with geohots jailbreak, all i wanted was the ability to run homebrew and do some things under the hood,

if you want cfw to do other unsavory things, do your research on what cfw works for your model, etc. you dont want to be left with a brick !

waninkoko's cfw works with these models
