Staff Redundancy issue

I was in the unfortunate position of having to make a staff member of 10 years (part-time) redundant yesterday.

We have tried every way not to lose any staff but major cuts have to happen to keep the comapny afloat, anyway, told the employee we were making them redundant. Today I came in to the office and the first call was from this person saying they had been on to citizens advice bureau and they have told her she is entitled to 6 weeks wages before she is made redundant. Is this correct we assumed we could make her redundant on the spot as it were?

All help appreciated.

From what i know , they are entitled to a weeks wages for every year that they have been there.

So its actually 10 weeks .

Forget the actual redundancy for a moment, is the person entitled to 6 weeks notice BEFORE they are made redundant?

You have to give notice to an employee. You cant just waltz in and say your made redundant and leave now.
