Apple TV2 problem

Hi, more problems with apple tv2, it may have already been covered elsewhere here. Got a iMac 2 mths ago then I got d apple tv2 at Christmas in NY. I have a standard eircom netopia wireless router.

The problem is the apple tv has only 2 bars out of 5 for the reception even though the wireless router is only 20ft away from it through a block wall. Also every 15 or 20 mins it drops the signal and I have to put in the wep code into the apple tv again. I thought these devices were supposed to be fairly foolproof.

I was just wondering if I was doing anything obviously wrong or is there an easy solution, one suggestion I saw on another forum was to get a wireless access point for the router? Afaik homesharing etc is all configured correctly. Thanks

I blame the poxy router: I have two ATV2 on my home network and have absolutely no problems whatsoever.

On the other hand, I spend most of my time in the republic helping friends with their poxy Netopia routers.

The first thing I would do is experiment with changing the channels -it's probably set to the default channel of 6. Apple devices typically prefer 9 or 11 -so try that.

You might also experiment with Google or OpenDNS' DNS settings -much better.

Is that change the channel on the apple tv device? I presume it's fairly self explanatory to do this.

No, absolutely not. It's change the channel on the router. The router operates on channels 1-13. You need to try these out to find the most suitable for your needs but I recommend 9 and 11.

You need to access the router's interface via Safari on 192.168.1.254 if memory serves.

If you are not comfortable with this, then you need to approach someone who can deal with this. It's not for the faint-hearted but it is relatively simple.

Your router came pre-set to 6 or probably 7. I'm almost certain that this is the cause. Proximity has nowt to do wi' it.

I changed to channel 11, the outcome is the apple tv works for certain things, eg photos, iTunes etc but the streaming for movies is still too slow. I'm still only getting 2/5 bars for wireless reception. Is it normal to get 5? Also strangely I was unable to play at normal speed a concert I downloaded. I could play it at double speed ok but not at normal speed. What's happenin'???

I'm now thinking of using a 20ft cable to connect my netopia router to the apple tv2 directly, should this solve my streaming problem? Most of the stuff I watch , I download onto the iMac first so all I want to do is stream it across. If so will a normal telephone cable work or must i get a specific one. Thanks in advance for any advice

I doubt it. Try the Google DNS servers instead.
