Bit of a mad Idea

Now, i've not really thought this through totally but had an idea and wanted to see responses from people both in the Industry and the normal driver (aswell as learner)

    We have approx 1800 ADI's.
Everyday we all see people break the law with regards to driving, whether its speeding, careless driving (eg overtaking solid white lines on a blind bend), learners driving on their own with L plates up etc etc

What if the ADI's were given 'special powers' to report these individuals (either stopping them or reporting their reg number to a hotline)

Would this be feasible, would it help prevent accidents, would it help promote safer driving ?

As i said not sure if its something that could happen or indeed if it should.

So basically, you want driving instructors to start doing the traffic corps job, because the truth is the traffic corps doesn't do their own job anyway?

Or is it just reporting them you're on about? Because anyone has the "power" to report someone for dangerous driving. Don't need to be an ADI for that.

If the gardaí started actually enforcing ALL the traffic laws instead of the few that're handy to enforce, that would help prevent accidents.

The mad idea was based on the fact that the traffic corps don't do the job...

I'm aware of the traffic watch scheme but the idea is that because the ADI's have a standard of driving skill and knowledge of the rules of the road that they would be in a better position to report these instances, almost a bit like Traffic Corp 'specials' and they would have some additional powers that the general public would not have.

As i said ... don't know if its workable, feasible or indeed downright stupid but thought i'd just throw it out there

But sure, if the TC don't do anything anyway, what's more reporting going to do about it?

    who knows,

When i'm driving about i see more Driving Instructors cars than i do Traffic Corp..so other drivers may drive more sensibly if they see an ADI about

Too true.. I saw two of the lazy gits walk straight past a car parked on a crossing in Tralee. No dount they were too busy discussing what they were going to crib for free at MacDonalds to spot any crimes happening.

Who knows.... if it helped to improve the standard of driving on the roads, it might be a good idea! I dont think the speed camera vans have had the desired effect, I haven't even seen one out and about! anyone else??

    Neither have I...

I would love to have special powers, but that is for a different thread. On this topic, I do not think I would want it. Driving instructors may know what is right, but that does not mean they always drive properly. Like the Gardai, they will sometimes break the rules aswell. Similarly, some are 'power trippers'. I would rather just do my job and let the Gardai do theirs. That said over the years I have stopped to phone the Gardai about obvious drunk drivers. On the safety camera: I spend a lot of time on the road, including a few drives between Dublin and Wexford. I have yet to see one.

I've seen about 5 speed camera vans, they seem to like being around Dundalk. Although, I think I heard one of them got burned on one of the roads out of Dundalk, so maybe they're not so keen now. :p

I don't think there's a working speed camera in Meath due to them being burnt out

Oh dear - some people's minds work in strange ways! Personally, I like seeing the speed camera vans as despite what a select few users in the motors forum seem to think, I believe that speed is a major factor in accidents. Reaction time goes up, combined with an increased braking distance. 10km/h could be the difference between life and death for somebody. I wouldn't like to think what would happen if a tyre blew out while travelling too fast.

There are no two ways about it.

Speed IS A MAJOR FACTOR in accidents and in particular fatal accidents

So the mad idea is just that .... a bit mad !!

it seems to me though that something has to be done, The speed cameras that were introduced at some god awful amount of money)hardly anywhere to be seen), and the missing traffic corps ... amounts to virtual anarchy on the roads half the time.

I agree that if i were an ADI i wouldn't be too happy to stop a driver and tell them i'm reporting you for speeding etc .... but if all ADI's were fitted with cameras then atleast there might be some supporting evidence when they report careless driving or something ... or is that a mad idea again :D

Not such a mad idea at all.... I have seen on a tv programme (cant remember which one now ) that one country has introduced cameras into new cars... This would not only benefit a report of bad driving with visual evidence, but could potentially help speed up any accident claims made where no one claims blame.

    Atleast somebody doesn't think i'm mad ;)

Best leaving it to the Gardai what you would see is people phoning in just for the sake of it,I have seen it in a company I worked for some moran decided to call our office about one of our drivers all because the free phone nbr was on the vehicle.
Example some plank doing 60k on a 120k motorway next of all a truck over takes the car and the plank then phones the office about the driver speeding:rolleyes:

I can see what you are saying, but i think if it is followed up with photographic evidence (via on board camera) then it should help eliminate any reports that may have a 'personal' vendetta attached.

Its just that if we leave it upto the Gards ..then nothing happens .. its not working at the moment so something has to give

I don't think there's a working speed camera in Meath due to them being burnt out

A few months ago I was dropping a friend home to Dunshauglin. I'd never been there before, and was doing about 10kmh over the speed limit...when I noticed a speed camera and started cursing and shouting :(

Then my mate turns to me and says 'don't worry, the first day that camera went up, it got burnt out...same as all the cameras in Meath' :pac:

    Anyways, back on-topic.

I'd like to know that the ADI's are focusing on their learner and not other drivers...imagine the learner made a mistake and nearly crashes but the ADI can't react because he's watching someone overtake?

Thats a good point ... i would think that the on board camera would just roll and if anything happened during a lesson, then nothing would be done re the footage until later in the day.
But whilst the ADI is driving about in their car (whilst not on a lesson) then the camera can keep rolling and provide any evidence of careless driving.

Even the thought of there being ADI's about in their well marked cars could provide enough deterrent to other drivers
