Whats a better fox round for a 22 hornet; hollow points, soft nosed or balistic tipped bullets??? Is there any particular brand that are good value at the moment. Just checking it out for a lad I shoot with. Thanks.

In my experience, Ballistic Tipped in a fox round rules supreme
I notice Hornady only offer there Hornet ammo that way these days.

I used to know loads of lads with Hornets 10 years ago or so, they used soft nose however ballistic tipped was not readily available here back then.

On a Fox "I" believe a small round does best in Ballistic tipped as it uses it's energy very effectively and drops a fox like a bag of spuds, also they are a bit more accurate if you want to push the range on any hunting round in my experience.

You'll notice all the .17 calibres tend to be ballistic tipped these days for the same reasons

Just on the balistic tip, I have only ever used hollow point in my CZ Hornet, would I need to re-zero if I went to balistic tip. Best hollow point I found was winchester but can't get them any more, use remi's these days.

Almost all ammo needs a rezero, however usually no more than 4 clicks @100 yards max up down left right when going from one brand to another .22

I changed from 125grain .308 yesterday to 150 grain and I used 6 clicks and that was as they were very different weight rounds.

Hollow to ballistic tip in the same weight round, maybe 2 clicks up and down.

fire 2 of each at a black dot on a piece of paper and then you will know for sure
Keep things simple and use either 100 yards

I shot a hornet for few years and found the winchester super X hollow points very good and when i counldnt get them any more used the remmy hollow points and found them very good also. last box i got was like 45 euro for 50. never tried the horandy ballistic tips but as tackle said i imagine they would very good for foxes.

Yes gary29428 you have to check zero for different types of bullets...might be feck all difference but might be a good bit off...

Stay away from sellior & bellot soft noses i got a box of 20 before for 10 euro but really didnt like them...very very dirty and not enough energy tranfered to target

I use hornady 35 grn in my ruger and find them very good, Only an observation, but I think the holding power at longer distance isnt has good as in a 45 grn in remmy and winchester. The heavier bullet has more energy.

Had a hornet for years, used to used softpoints but changed to ballistic tips (hornady 35 or 40gr - cant remember exactly). Gave it a new lease of life really in terms of knocking charlie.

i used a hornet for a long time winchester hollow points were the bullet of choice for me way and above the remington crap s&b were also rubbish we got rws hollow point stuff once extremely accurate but had no knock down power at all what should have been dead foxes were not and had to be dealt with alternatively
the thing i liked about the winchester super x was very seldom did you get a pass through the bullet left all it's umphhh in mr charles and didn't make a huge mess of the skin either

I got a box at Tannyoky guns in Newry during the summer. I've bought them in a few places in the North, seems to be the standard.

using hornady 35gr vmax myself at the moment, was using remington and found them ok but then had trouble with bad brass, a guy i go hunting with uses winchester and swears by them but i havent been able to get them around me, he gets them in Rahan, i might try a box of federal soft points next as i saw them in stakelums lately but hadnt the money on me at the time, remington have a new 35gr balistic tip round aswell but havent seen them either

Last time I bought Hornady I paid €22 and bought 2 boxes (2 x25). Id like to try the Winchester again

Winchester or Remington hollows here. Tried soft nosed once but found they lacked the quick punchy energy transfer you get from the hollow points, they were excellent for bunnies though due to their slower expansion.

Hard to beat Hornady 35gr v max. 20.50 a box is best I have found.
