You won't get a diesel Subaru for under 4k you would do well to get one for under 20k. You might be able to pick up an Audi Quattro variant but again I would say you would do well to get a diesel within your budget.

You could go down the route of a off-road 4x4 of some sorts (Range Rover/Pajaro maybe) it would give you more options.

Have a 2004 Audi A4 Avant Sport Quattro and would recommend it 100%. Its a rare enough 1.9 TDI 130bhp option - imported from UK

Its a solid car to drive. Had subaru also. Audi feels more solid to drive and less tinny/ plastic.

With Audi be prepared to spend a few quid on the list of problems.

Overall well worth the money and yet to find something I would consider changing it for.

A bit above the budget - around 10K mark for mine now, but fully loaded with leather, sat nav and all the the other goodies. Search in the UK - should be able to pick up something in your budget.

Vitara.. Freelander.. but I suspect anything for 4K will be a dog.
