My machine running windows 7 will no longer start it, it goes to the "Startup Repair" utility which never returns, I left it running overnight and it was still going this morning.

Should I just be able to boot from the windows cd and run a repair?

what error does it give at start up?

it could be 2 seperate things.

Bootloader is dead or the hard drive is dead.

fixing the bootloader is as simple as putting in the win7 cd and repairing the start up.
the other option, a dead hard drive will require a new one. not worth trying to fix. if the hardware diagnostics in the machine dont finish then it could indicate that it is a HDD failure so need more info from you.

No offence but you'd need a bit more detail than that - as Keywal just asked - are you getting a specific error message when you startup and are you able to run Windows in Safe Mode?

You can throw in the Win 7 CD and try to run the diagnostics there - or if you've created a restore point then the CD will allow you to return to that point.

Again as Keywal said it could be a Hard Drive error so running a chkdsk might shed some light on that for you and it'd be one of the first things I'd look at
