    Work experience requirements for CIMA?

I come from an IT background have Business Analysis, Project Mgt and developed finance and taxation software. I have done my own accounts as a sole trader..but little else.

I just wondering will this be enough to meet the work experience requirements to qualify for cima?

I doubt it, you may get pro-rata credit for provable time spent in a finance/accounting role.

In any event, you need to have your experience directly supervised and signed off by a qualified accountant.

Not true for CIMA. You need a proposer and seconder who between them can sign off 36 months of relevant experience - they should have direct knowledge of your work and be in a more senior position - ideally your manager. They do not need to be a member of CIMA or any other accountancy body.

The 36 months experience has to include at least 18 months "core" experience which can be addded to with either basic or supplemental experience. Some of your experience would count towards this requiremnt but see link below for further guidance:

    Thanks Richard,

See I'm self employed and have done accounts for my own business, then would have these checked over by Professional Accountant for each tax year.

Does my own experience count here? I don't have a supervisor as run my own business?

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person who can use Google :D I don't mind, I like knowing stuff to be able to advise friends..

    Google: self-employed experience cima

And the first match is : http://community.cimaglobal.com/discussions/practical-experience/self-employed
Yes, you can use the experience gained whilst self employed as part of your application for CIMA membership - as long as it's relevant experience of course.

Who might be a suitable signatory depends on the nature of your business but could include your auditor, bank manager or a key client - basically anyone who is independent and can verify the description of the work completed.

If you want to talk it through, give our contact team a call on +44 (0) 20 8849 2251.

    Best wishes

    Thanks Tenchi-fan ;-)

Don't be so mean to me about the Google!

I started this thread on the 19th Jan and the link you quoted from CIMA was 3rd of Feb ;-)

I just don't want to do exams and then get told I have to leave my business to work in a practice accountants for 18months! I don't have an interest in the practice side of things that is why am looking at CIMA.

    ... 2010.. ahem..

Anyway, you should give them a call to discuss your options.

The thing about cima is it's considered an industry qualification so i doubt you'd need any experience in a practice.

Best of luck with your endeavour!

If you register as a student with CIMA they sometimes have information evenings where you can bring your CV and discuss the experience requirements in person, the CIMAsphere website also has a good discussion board.
