MTV changes ahead

So Sky are changing things around with MTV, wondering if anyone thinks UPC will do anything to match.

    In summary:
    • MTV Shows is closed
    • MTV (the old MTV One) leaves the Music Category and joins General Entertainment, moving to channel 126 (on Sky)
    • The old MTV EPG slot is replaced by a new MUSIC focused channel, MTV Music
    • Thus MTV is ensuring only MTV branded channels in the Music Category are actually music

What are the chances UPC will notice? This happens Feb 1st, can UPC act that quickly? Will we get this new MTV Music? Will it just replace MTV Shows? Will MTV move or stay on 701? So many questions......

It probably should be in the kids section as that's who it appeals to.

I've been saying it for years that MTV should be moved to Entertainment, it hasn't been a music channel for a long long time.

It's a strange one alright. It's not music but I wouldn't call the rubbish they show entertainment either.

Rather then start a new thread, Sky 3 is also changing next week. It's no more. A new Pick TV channel will replace it.

Already reported. Wotsat are saying Feb 28th is the date for rebranding - http://wotsat.techradar.com/news/sky3-become-pick-tv-25-01-11.

What's your source for next week?

    On UPC:
MTV Music is directly replacing MTV one
Living and Living +1 will just be name changed on UPC
    Channel One is finishing up
UPC and Sky are in talks regarding Sky Atlantic and is looking positive so expect it in the near future

I wonder if this will be the case on analogue also?

Yes it is although from October all analogue will be gone plus digital is cheaper :)

Really? When did UPC announce that analogue is going?

Its not UPC its something being done by the government :)

UPC are allowed to keep analogue going in perpetuity if they wish, the ASO legislation is for terrestrial only.

You are getting confused. The analogue terrestrial network will be turned off in 2012. This has nothing to do with the UPC network.

Any idea of what will happen with MTV Shows? That is being removed, will UPC place the new entertainment focused MTV in its place?

Not sure where you're getting this info. At present the UPC EPG is showing MTV Music's listings in MTV Show's EPG slot from Tuesday onwards. Now I cannot believe that MTV would agree for MTV UK and Ireland to be dropped from UPC - particularly from the analogue service - for MTV Music just like that. Quite simply for the reason that Irish opt-out advertising is sold on MTV UK, so if it were dropped from UPC, the value of these advertising slots would drop dramatically. (That's not to mention the army of teenagers who would be up in arms if their doses of Jersey Shore and The Hills were to be denied them).
Living and Living +1 will just be name changed on UPC

Well flagged at this stage. However it looks like Sky 3 will be assuming Channel One's role, it is becoming Pick TV, but not on Tuesday (that change doesn't happen for another month).

There is no mention of the UPC analogue service being closed any time soon and no government requirement to close it. Doubtless UPC would like to do it but the fact is that practically everyone I know, even with digital, is using analogue to drive a second or third TV and there would be uproar if they were to do it now. I'd give it a few years if UPC is to avoid a PR disaster on that front.

Analogue is still carrying MTV here in Dublin.

And it will continue to for the forseeable future, I'd imagine. Pulling MTV UK and replacing it with MTV Music was never going to happen, for the reasons I've mentioned above.

Whether MTV UK should be in the Music section of the digital EPG (or indeed get away with continuing to subtitle itself "Music Television") is another debate.

Why has UPC decided it label Channel 708 "MTV MUSIC" instead of MTV Music http://www.mtv.co.uk/tv-guide#mtv-music All other MTV channels are labelled in Title Case

    On that note...
    709 VIVA should be Viva
    717 KISS should be Kiss

It's because they don't pay attention to the details! Don't they also have "Film 4" and "FILM4+1" (or something along those lines).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭JDxtra

Note that Sky have "RTE One" and "RTE TWO".

The Channel Naming has always bugged me. The name on an EPG should not be an afterthought. It's a critical part of the service, like having a phone number. If they spell it wrong, it's wrong. Surely Channels/Broadcasters must be aware of the EPG and submit guidelines to cable operators, EPG owners for DTV/Cable/Satellite etc.

Is this a big deal? Really?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,967 ✭✭✭JDxtra

It's not a big deal. It's just annoying and unprofessional looking. They need somebody competent in charge of channel naming and numbering!

Spotted these other mistakes (according to the online TV guide)…
    • Sky Three – this should be Sky 3 to match Sky 1 & Sky 2
    • Disc Channel +1 - this should be simply Discovery +1 to match the main channel
    • Sky SCi-Fi/Horror – why is there a capital C in there?
    • Sky Sports – this should be Sky Sports 1
    • MTV MUSIC - why is music in capitals?

Really? It wouldn't be a big deal if I didn't post about it now - really.
