Wow... To retire ahead of a massive pay day like that, potentially two. His heart must defo not be in it. Was the fight signed and sealed?

I always felt he could position himself to challenge for a world title and if unsuccessful fight for and win the EBU at the end of his career. Suppose even if the hunger was there, Duddys style wouldnt let him fight on too much longer.

Hope he is as successful outside of the ring as he was in it.

You'd think he'd fight Lee and then retire....

This is bizarre, doesnt make sense..:confused::confused:
    Wish John the best though..

Wasn't expecting that ,really enjoyed some of his fights, but that chavez fight was hard to watch.
It would be unfair to my fans, my trainer and manager, and everyone else involved in the promotion of my fights for me to continue boxing when I know that my heart isn’t in it. I’ve always given one hundred percent in the gym and in my fights. I have too much respect for boxing and the people around me to continue fighting when I know that I can’t do that anymore.
Says everything you need to know about him really.
Thanks for the fights Duddy :)

does anyone think he didnt want to fight lee and lose to another irishman like. its bad enough to lose but to lose against lee would be hard to take? im not saying he wouldnt have won but i wonder did this have anything atal got to do with it. i always liked duddy, always thought he was a cool guy.

Limited fighter, but entertaining. He must have knowna week ago that he was mulling over retirement. Why the **** get the Irish Boxing Fan's hopes up with the fight over Lee and then blow it? This is a fight we have all been waiting for for years.

It is of course the correct decision if his heart is not in it, but his timing couldn't be worse. In my head, I will always have the thought that part of the reason he retired is because he didn't want to lose to Lee and that be his last fight, and Im probably not the only one.

Shame, was really looking forward to that fight. You have to feel sorry for Andy Lee, he just can't catch a break.

Probably more a case of when the fight was signed and he got back in the gym he realised it wasnt there anymore.

It's not an easy thing to admit, I dont think he should take any stick for it to be honest.

Good luck in whatever he decides to do.

he has been pretty honest about it in fairness to him.

think the chavez fight took a lot out of him mentally. all the preparation went well up to the fight, but he just wasn't as good as chavez. i think after losin to lyell he knew he was better than that but maybe he saw his limits after chavez.

loads of respect for him, fair play.

Best of luck to him, got out at the right time

I was really looking fwd to that fight, just happy I didn't book the flights. Any chance Macklin will step in? I'm a bit worried for Duddy his head mustnt be straight as he is turning down the biggest pay day of his career and a chance to go out in style even if he looses. I like Duddy a lot and hope it works out for him. Feel sorry for Lee how many more dead rubbers will he have to fight before he gets a chance to make a name for himself. Has he commented on the situation anywhere?

Very disappointed too, but have huge respect for Duddys decision.
How many fighters have turned up for a round or two, collect their cheque and make the excuses afterwards.

As said before his heart wasnt in it,
and if anything he has done Lee a big favour.

    All the best John Duddy.

Surprised that he wont even fight one more time.

Probably the correct move for John, his career has stalled over the last few years. No easy fights out there. 100k is not a huge payday for what a fighter has to go through, especially one of John;s style.

    Wish him all the best

100K to fight Lee is a hell of a lot. I think Duddy could win, and by stoppage.
I reckon it wouldn't be as bruising or tough a fight as some others he has been in.

Under normal circumstances I would favour Duddy to stop him late. IMO duddy has a strong beard and a bigger heart.. however his heart / desire is clearly gone and he made the right move.

100k is nothing. It may be a decent wage but at what cost.

That is my point, I don't think the cost, if you are referring to the flow and style of fight, will be as rough and tough as other bouts he has been in.

I doubt he got anything close to 100 K for beating Eastman, a real bruiser that...

Maybe not... but it's that age old mistake... ah just one more. It's refreshing and smart for John to make this moves. His mind and body isn't in it any more and that is when you get hurt.

Well, I guess if his heart and sould isn't in it, then Lee could prove to be
his toughest fight, so, agreed, get out, John.

It's refreshing to see such candour from a fighter for a change. I definitely think the loss to Chavez Jr is a critical factor in this decision. All the best to him.
