Switching Orthodontist Mid-treatment

So I'm going to get braces, and have been told to expect it to take around 18 months to two years, maybe longer. I have the money saved up, and am prepared to go for it, but there's a snag: I had planned to leave Ireland in a little under 2 years (my course is finished, and to continue I need to go abroad). I'm not sure where I'll end up, but it's either the US or the UK. I asked my dentist about finishing the treatment in the US, and he was unsure if this would be possible (he thought it would be unlikely that an orthodontist over there would be willing to take over someone else's work). Has anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? I can delay leaving for a year, but I know how these sorts of treatments are unpredictable and can take a while.

The alternative is to get the treatment done entirely in the US. I'm uneasy about this - I'd rather not be trying to sort out my teeth while also getting settled into a new country, and it seems crazy to delay the treatment when I've got the money saved (and my teeth are steadily getting more crooked). The cost over there seems about the same. Would they have the same standard of care as over here?

    Hi there

most orthodontic treatments would be finished in 2 years. Your orthodontist should be able to tell you if you will be finished in time.

It is best to start and finish with the same person but sometimes a transfer is unavoidable.

You can transfer to an orthodontist when you move to the US if you need to. Just ask someone to recommend an orthodontist. The snag is that a transfer will cost a bit more and take longer. The standard of care should be the samein US or UK.

    good luck

If you go to a registered orthodontist in the UK or US they should be as good as Ireland. It is however madness (in my opinion) to plan to change orthodontists. Ask your orthodontist to give you a timeline for treatment including worst case scenario and plan to stay that long.
    Hope it goes well
