W123 diesel conversion

    What would be the best engine/box to use for the above conversion? I have heard of a few with the w124 2.5 and I have driven a 190d 75 bhp engine conversion and thought it was very dead and slow. I would like to keep the car manual any ideas?

    Do you already have a 123 body that you want to convert? If not just go away and buy a diesel 250 or 300. With a conversion you may have to fiddle with the rear diff regarding ratios.

    Seweryn et al,

    this question may have been answered on a previous thread .... but, in your opinion which of the 123 diesels delivers the best performance/economy/reliability for everyday transport (say an average of 200 miles per week) ?

    I would buy a W123 Diesel and avoid the unnecessary and expensive hassle, which may not work the way it should.

    Its already converted with a 190d 75bhp engine but is very slow and underpowered especially on hills. I have driven other 240d and 300d's and they were a lot livelier than this. I guess easiest thing to do is to fit a 300d engine/box/axle from a w123.

    Reliability is very similar in all Diesel engines installed in the 123-series. These are one of the most reliable engines ever made.
    Performance wise - the OM617 in 300D is the most powerful, but a bit thirstier than the 4-cylinder engines in 200D, 220D and 240D, which are more less equally economical. The best balance represents the OM616 in 240D, I think. But I would buy the one in best condition regardless of the engine type.
    I used to drive a 300TD and the car managed almost 40mpg on average, but it was equipped with a 5-speed Getrag transmission.

    A 300 multivalve might fit in easily enough if you can find the right engine mounts, loads of power and good econony and reliability. Try find some one who did merc engine transplants and they should be able to fill you in on what's involved.

    The major problem I can see is the fact that the OM606 was designed for 15 degrees inclination in the engine bay, while the OM615-OM617 were installed with cylinders vertically. That can be all sorted, but you need to keep these details in mind.
    I actually have a spare OM606 engine with an automatic transmission and accessories... May be a good idea for a transplant :).

    OM606 was fitted into the W124-series (model E300) from 1993 up. Also continued in the W210 in two versions - naturally aspirated and turbocharged in later edition. As a donor engine I would avoid it from the W210, as the injection pump is electronically controlled as is the transmission.
