Insuring a Mk1 Pajero ('89)

Only bought it a few days ago and I've been driving it up and down our country lanes (and in and out a few fields and forestsbiggrin.gif) without insurance, so today I rang my insurance broker to transfer cover from my vito van to the paj. for a week, just so I can do a few things on it until I sort out full cover, and they told me the company I'm with (Zurich) won't insure it because of it's age. mad.gif She's an '89.
I argued this is ridiculous, any commercial vehicle like this has to be tested every year and once it's passed it's DOE it is considered roadworthy by the dept. of the environment, so why not Zurich Insurance??
If it's passed it's test there should be no problem surely? It's DOE'd til September.
Anyways, they said Zurich won't consider it, maybe Hibernian would and they'd ring me back. They didn't.
My Vito is with Zurich (formerly Eagle Star) and I need to renew it's policy in february, am thinking about telling them to stick it and look elsewhere.
I would have preferred having both vehicles with the one company though, might have got a cheaper deal. They're both commercially taxed, 'own goods' tax class.
Anyways, hoping to get it sorted soon. Anyone got recommendations?

go to a broker, if your over 30 years old don't pay any more than 500 euro, mines is 350 fully comp for a commercial 2.8 97. can't remember what it was for the old 89 pajero i had but it was insured privately and taxed commercially back when things weren't so strict.

I'm insured with Zurich through a broker in Wexford. Have been with them for about ten years now since I changed from private to commercial, no claims or accidents, one windscreen replacement in ten years and now they think I'm a liability for driving an '89 (tested) Pajero:rolleyes: Cunts.

Rang my broker today, (Sheridan Insurance Wexford), they said Setanta wouldn't do it. I don't get it..
I've got about 15 years no claims bonus and a jeep that's passed it's DOE test. In a way what they're saying is that a DOE test means nothing. To my mind anyway.
Then they said Hibernian would cover me but it would cost 750 euro.:rolleyes:Apparently because of it's age, and because I'm insuring a different vehicle and my no claim wouldn't count for that. Bollocks to that I think. A no claims bonus is down to the driver, not the vehicle.
Also I have my 2.2L turbo diesel Vito insured as commercial for 340 euro.
Will keep looking anyway, someone said try Wexford Insurances, will do tomorrow.

I finally insured the jeep, went with Wexford Insurances, they'll insure the van and let me transfer insurance to the jeep whenever I want and for any length of time for 370 euro fully comp. Can't argue with that. ;) Means I don't have to worry about finding the money to insure both vehicles separately, just the commercial tax on both.

It really doesn't mean anything, not trying to be a bollocks but they're not worth the paper they're printed on.

I bought a pajero before and it had a 3 day old DOE. I wasn't as stringent as I should have been in checking the jeep over as I placed a lot of confidence on the fresh test.

The next day when I had the jeep home I found a rather large rusty hole in the chassis. It's since been repaired and luckily it was free and by someone extremely competent but that episode completely destroyed my confidence in the DOE.

Ive heard of a few doe centres out there that are doin dodgy doe certs.
I went to look at a bighorn recently which had been doe tested 1 week previously.
The drivers seat was ripped to bits. There was a very bad oil leak from the sump gasket. The 2 rear bump stops were completly rusted away on the back and all that was left was 2 bolts and a bit of rusty steel plate.
When i challenged yer man selling it he said he threw the tester 20 quid to let the ripped seat og...he said he didnt know about the oil leak....:) or the bump stops.....The place it was tested i thought was legit ut obviously not...

Sorry probobly running off the point a bit here...

I suppose there are bound to be some dodgy ones, or rather ones that have dodgy characters working in them..
The jeep I bought was tested at the same DOE centre where I usually get the van tested, and I know the people who own it, I also know they wouldn't give ya an easy ride when it comes to the test.
I wouldn't consider anyone going easy on the vehicle as doing me a favour tbh, I'd wanna know it's safe.

Could you keep the Vito and insure the Paj as a classic ??

Thought about it alright, but then you get a mileage restriction as far as I know, and I'm happy enough just transferring cover from the vito when I need the jeep. I will find out more about it alright, if it saves me an awful lot of money it's worth considering, but not if the mileage restriction is too low.
