My timing belt cracked this morning. A mechanic buddy said it could cost me 600+ to get done...i'm still in shock!

My knowledge of cars is minimal but he was saying that i could have damaged valves in the engine too?

Anyway, does anyone know anywhere cheap in cork that might do it??

Sometimes its cheaper to get a second hand engine as sourcing a head can be a cnut!

Can't your "mechanic"" buddy do it for you ? I'm not being funny but if the mechanic who diagnosed it can't do it or recommend someone to do it then I have to ask how good is his diagnosis , why don't you phone your local main dealer and ask him for a quote and even confirm the problem before you do anything else , instead of asking the world to make wild guesses and assumptions based on a suspect diagnosis at best.
Bear in mind in these recessionary times your main dealer might not be as expensive as you think !!

I did ask him, he said he wouldn't have the time. He's a mechanic in one of the biggest deaerships in Cork so i respect his opinion, plus i've always gone to him with other smaller problems. I see Blackwater Motors currently have a deal for timing belt and water pump for €420, but i think this is a minimum price. Will ring them in the morning anyway

That would be for replacing one that did not snap, you'll be looking at a good lash more as the VW engine is not non interference so it's quite likely there will be bent valves.

Hi,just off top of my head is your Seat leon a 1.4 petrol with BCA engine code,im saying this as its a common fault with these engines
I would be thinking no matter what type engine you will have bend valves and between reconditioning the head, timing belt kit, head gasket and labour you will be looking at over 650euro
