55 € down in 5 min. on Iphone 4 and Meteor

    This is the story:

    • Had 80€ credit on my payg meteor sim with iphone 4
    • streamed sky news on my wifi at home
    • closed the app with homebutton and walked out
    • app runs in background reaches 50 mb daily limit
    • charges 20.48 € from there on per mb
    • way to late got a text warning me that i reach my daily 50mb deal
    • 55 € down in a couple of min
    Conclusion:
    • Iphone multitasking seems to work
    • never have more tha 20€ credit on the phone
    • 20.48 per mb is a perverted amount of money
    • my fault kind of , i know- BUT
all european payg deals offer now a kind of airbag- whatever you do- you'll never pay more than 39.90
    • the irish market is too small for reasonable prizes
still like meteor a lot for its speed and deals, but , man , stay within the limits

i think its fair to say that the iphone is not designed to be used on a payg basis.

it is a fair assumption- trouble is all "care free, no surprise" plans start at around 30€

for 20€ top up I get 250MB which gets me half through the week plus 10€ off my credit for the rest in 0,69€ 50 MB packages- still 10€ left

was convinced i was clever with that until it bit me in the bum
need another solution with skype video calls on the phone now, which are great fun

    I've been through something similar.

    Solution;
go to Settings - Network and turn 3g Off & turn Mobile Data Off.
Now I have no more wierd charges on my iphone bill anymore. :)
I just let it use wi-fi only now.

The best option, 6 months ago for pay as you go,on the iphone was:
    (1) Get the network provider to turn off cellular data - just use wifi
    (2) Get a data package
    (3) Request refund from cellular network provider

Cellular data is so slow anyway!
P.s - Your not the first and wont be the last!

    Email steve jobs secretary!
The carriers charge around 2 euro to do a simple search in google on the iphone... Personally id say buy a Nokia

it is a solution - but doesn't really reflect the push notification we live in, or i at least want to live in.

mail, facebook, skype, twitter, ebay are all real time and that's what i want.

I am on 3 PAYG and for €5 you can buy a 500mb bundle that you can use for 1 month. I do not have an iphone and the coverage is ok.
    Could be an option.

Edit, as above, this is actually a Nokia.

    two notes on this-

    - i have no grounds for a refund- balanced at the edge of the cliff and fell over

    - meteor on my phone is faster than my wifi at home- speedtest app

finally, without hurting anyone- Nokia lost it- don't bother reviving a dead corpse

As you said its your own fault:)

While it's your own fault, Meteor made sure to push you over that cliff by not even offering an option where your data usage could just be cut off after 50 MB. So it would be fair to implicate them as well:

You walked to the edge of a cliff, but Meteor gave you that push. If they were being fair, they would offer their customers a way to cap the usage at 50 MB, instead of charging €20 per megabyte!!! By the way, with Vodafone 360 you get 100 MB per day instead of 50. Works great on iPhone.

I know data is expensive in Ireland, if you are wanting to go on PAYG the 3 offer does appear to be "unlimited" it does not state a specific MB amount in the T&C's, you get free unlimited text and weekend calls, too. So not a bad deal! Although the iPhone does not do so well on the 3 network, apparently. I think Voda do .99c a day, not sure what the limit there is.

Personally I find iPhone without a data package is a bit pointless. The vision of iPhone (and the reason it was revolutionary) is that the internet was in your pocket, all the time. Apps didn't come for another 12 months (and are only now getting in full swing).

While at home, over Christmas, I used my 3Gs with my 3-IRL SIM and turned cellular data off. What a PITA! Being used to having my e-mail, internet, facebook, radio, etc at any time took some adjusting to and was incredibly frustrating. I might as well have had a Nokia! (the ones for a tenner are best!) Definatly moving to the unlimited data/weekend calls/text when the contrat is up on August.

    double tap the home button.
hold the app icons in the bottom tray that pops up and delete them from there.

I don't understand how you could put your head in the mouth of the lion, so to speak, with such a dangerous arrangement.

Just get a 3Pay SIM -enjoy 500mb bundles of data for a 5iver, anywhere on the island of Ireland, subject to coverage. Queue those bundles for seamless performance.

Don't want 3? Go to Vodafone. stick 30€ on get 36€. Immediately enjoy free SMS/Voice to all Vodafone numbers. Then convert 20 of that 36 to the data add-on and enjoy 5GB a month, leaving you 16€ credit to other networks and landlines, if needed. 5Gb too much? Then sign up to Vodafone 360 for 100mb a day for 0,39c -though this is still courting danger.

    Simples.

Frankly, I think data is quite cheap in Ireland, easy to access, simple to get. You should try getting data in France or Spain. Nightmare!

It isn't unlimited, that is a misnomer. It's 500mb per 5€ package -quite a lot, but not as good as 3 Italy which give me 3Gb a month for the same 5€. On the other hand it is perfectly possible to queue each bundle of 500mb -which will go quite a long way on an iPhone.

I have no problems whatsoever with 3/iphone. I use a 3IRL SIM for data in Belfast daily and incur no charges or problems, even sharing the data via the upcoming HotSpot feature.

Vodafone offer a paltry 50mb for 99c a day, avoid.

agreed, thought i was particular clever with this one & in all fairness worked out for 6 months.

i'm well impressed how easy payg works in ireland, but 30c for minute is a far cry from the 9c in europe- i know it represents the market

9c per min is tops in germany & austria, 10€ for 1GB data- as i said "airbag" at 39€ - you never pay more on all national calls, text & data a month

Go to your online account at Vodafone.ie, sign into the 'Extras' section of your account and choose the add-on.

Use the isp APN in ireland, live outside the State.

I tried that before last year in Spain and it it didn't work from the live apn I got fleeced. Do you think it has changed?

The situation has changed since the 24th of November last year -for the worse.

Last year I could happily use the Live! APN @ 39c a day for 100mb in France and Spain -which was pretty damn perfect. Using Mifi, I could keep an eye on it and not go over the 100mb.

Since the 24/11, Vodafone now charge you 39c a day PLUS 2€ for the privilege of accessing just 50mb a day which has torpedoed the previous happy situation and reintroduced the hassle of having to research a local solution. You must use the Live! APN to avail of this "facility".

This has nothing to do with this add-on.

There is some confusion as to whether, having purchased this add-on, you can avail of it abroad with the 2€ penalty. It seems not as a poster in another thread tried it for us and was debited 4€ in seconds after he had used up the 50mb.

This is where Voodoo and I parted company: I think it's a pretty handy add-on within the State but thanks to their now punishing rates abroad, they can stick it.
