I've got the MxAfee antivirus that college gives free, I'm wondering does anyone else get a message every three or four days saying "McAfee ViruScan Enterprise Is Out Of Date" or something like that. When I update it, it's out of date again in 3 or 4 days.

New viruses are being being created daily.

McAfee must download new virus definitions on a regular basis.

Can I get it to do this automatically though, without me having to click into it and all? i know i sound like a lazy hoor.

Are you sure it's actually updating? If you never configured proxy settings for Internet Explorer it'll fail every time it tries to update, and you'll see the message again next time you boot up.

I'm pretty sure it is yeah, I used to get this "can't find repository" message but that doesn't happen anymore, I brought it to a network clinic and they fixed it up. It says "update finished" or something like that, but it still asks me to update every few days. I should probably bring it to a network clinic again.

Can't find repository would be it failing to get through the proxy alright. If you want to check if auto-update is on, you can right click the McAfee icon, click on 'VirusScan Console...' and scroll to the bottom.

That's what mine is doing, but it fails to update. The one that came with my laptop did not go out of date for much longer, and updated successfully- no settings changed in the meantime.

Thanks, I think, with your help, I may have figured it out. It is set to auto update daily at 1700. Maybe if I don't have it on in college (it only updates when i'm in college, something to do with the proxy or something) after 1700, it will give me that message because it has missed its update?

can you use the one that came with your laptop on the college network?

There's nothing stopping you from not using McAfee you know, I think Microsoft Security Essentials is a better AV. You only need McAfee to register. So if you have to rereg you only need to reinstall or use one of the other various workarounds.

I'm not saying that ISS approve of this or anything, but there it is.
