Looking for advise on changing cars. Have just started looking and noticed the above 2 examples both selling for around the €18/19k mark. Wondering if anybody could give their views on these or indeed an alternative . Do about 35k km per year, mainly motorway, need relability and something that will ocassionally hold a family of 5 in relative comfort.

From my limited knowledge both of the above should tick most of these boxes and I'm wondering is the VW premium worth it? Mind you think the Mondeo model just changed so the arse will fall out of its price more than usual.

    I'd welcome your thoughts.

Mondeo all day long. Bigger, more comfortable, quieter and far better on the motorway. As for quality I would think the Ford is a bit better than the VW.

I agree, golf is not at the races.

I would have the Mondeo aswell. A way more room and comfort than the Golf.

There really isn't a right or wrong answer here as the Mondeo and Golf are not in the same class as each other. The Passat is a competitor to the Mondeo and the Focus is to the Golf.

BTW I don't buy into the logic that the car with the best resale value is the best buy. The Golf will hold it's value better than most other cars in it's class down to the perception that Joe Public has of VWs but that in turn means you pay more for them so you are buying at a high price to sell on afterwards at a high price. Whereas with the Ford you are buying cheaper to sell on afterwards cheaper.

Thanks for replies - little surprised 3 - 0 to the Mondeo, would have thought Golf would have done better

Mondeo is light years ahead. It might lose a couple of k more in depreciation but the comfort is in a different league. I'd pay for that plus it handles like a car from a class below...
