Hey Im 20 male, currently in 1st year business higher certificate course in I.T.T.Im planning to go ahead and study the accounting lev7 from the choice of marketing/management/accounting and subequently lev8 accounting.
My question is how would potential employers look at my qualifications as it would be a degree from an I.T. and I used the ladder system by starting at lev6 and continued to lev7/8.Would graduates of commerce from NUIG/UCC,Accounting UCD etc.be looked on as superior to me?
    Thanks.:)

Yes don't even compare the 2 if you can go to a university

For Big 4 it would likely make a difference if you were looking for Graduate entry – fact of life I’m afraid.

However, get your degree and get some professional qualifications and some experience (bit of a catch 22 I know) and your lack of a Uni degree decreases exponentially. After getting qualified and have some experience it would be a very rare thing for it to matter at all.

    Good luck.

Ok cheers for that.Do you know if employers take much note of the fact you entered at higher cert level and not at lev8?Or once you achieve a lev8 its worth the same regardless of how you got there?

I would not think it would matter much. Most employers would not drill down into the make up of your degree - they don't have time to devote that much time to CVs.

I agree with Smcgiff. Your best bet is to start getting experience. Its what will make your CV stand out. Yes your degree when u get there may be viewed in as a lesser "worth" than a TCD/UCC, etc degree but that is just perception that is out there. Dont think the learning you get in ITT is any less of people in these colleges.

Best advice to you is to get some experience. Its vital to get ahead for graduate positions. Start getting it now though. Use your summer's wisely. I know once u get the break u just want to get off on holidays but u have to make the sacrifice. Internships or some work experience in small/medium practice would be of benefit. Do a good job and they'll ask u back..may even offer u a position when u graduate.

Why not transfer to one of the Universities? Is that an option for you? I went to ITT for a few years and tbh if I never see the place again it'll be too soon. Subsequently went to another college that was 1000% better for me. Most of the guys starting in Big 4 are NUI, DCU, TCD. Haven't met one from an IT yet

Id have to disagree with this. I went to an IT myself - having passed my leaving cert with very good grades I got accepted to universities but decided on an IT as it was close to home. I went on to do my Masters in accounting and three people in my masters class went on to get trainee positions in the big four.

In my first year at college, i sent my CV to all accounting firms in my area for summer work & got accepted. I spent every summer of my college years working for the same practice & I actually undertook my training contract with the same firm.

Good luck to you whatever you decide to do but dont let having studied in an IT put you off!

A Masters from IT doesn't give you the required exemptions from professional exams than say the Masters in Accounting from UCD so therefore isn't worth as much.

Not speaking for all courses in ITT. I can just speak for the courses I did.

Those cold grey un-plastered walls still give me nightmares:D

What extra exemptions do you get from passing a masters in a university rather than passing them in an IT??

As previously mentioned I done my masters at an IT & went on to complete a training contract with ICAI - my masters exempted me from Prof I & Prof II exams - all I had to sit were my FAE's.

So I dunno what extra exemptions you get from a university!

I currently in my final year of an accounting degree from an I.T. University students are favoured when applying for graduate positions something I wish I knew when filling in the cao.

However 2 girls in my class who have consistantly got 1.1 all the way through plus worked in practice for the summer have got jobs with the big 4 and I myself have had a few interviews.

So my point is while university students are favoured, your results and work experience would have a bigger influence on employers.

Generally you get CAP1 with a relevant recognised degree and CAP2 with a relevant recognised Masters. Don't remember IT Tallaght being on the list (for Masters exemptions). Was mostly UCD, DCU and NUI Galway.

They would all much rather prefer people from UCD, DCU etc.
I was in a similar situation to yourself, I did my level 8 degree in Accounting from NCI and didn't get a placement but I got accepted into UCD Smurfit for masters and I applied again to the big 4 and got call backs from all of them and Deloitte offered me a place in the end so took it.
